Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a topical formulation of olopatadine for treatment of allergic or inflammatory disorders of the eye and nose. SOLUTION: The aqueous formulations of this invention contain approximately 0.17 to 0.62%(w/v) of olopatadine and an amount of polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polystyrene sulfonic acid sufficient to enhance the physical stability of the formulation. The solution composition that can topically be administered for treatment of allergic or inflammatory disorders of eyes or noses is disclosed and the composition includes approximately 0.17 to 0.62%(w/v) of olopatadine and an amount of polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polystyrene sulfonic acid sufficient to enhance the physical stability of the formulation. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ophthalmologic lens capable of having variation of spherical power, and variation of spherical aberration. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, the two-element ophthalmologic lens is composed in such a way that lateral shift of two elements in mutual relation can cause both variation of spherical power provided by the lens and variation of spherical aberration provided by the lens. In some other embodiments, thickness profile of the two elements is designed in such a way that variation of the spherical aberration is in positive relation with variation of the spherical power of the lens. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ophthalmic cannula which permits curved instruments to be inserted into a surgical site. SOLUTION: The cannula has a tube that is longitudinally open along the entire, or along substantially the entire, length of the tubing. In the same way, attached to a proximal end of the tubing is a hub that is also longitudinally open. The hub acts as a stop to prevent the entire cannula from entering a surgical incision site. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method usable to prepare for proper selection and centering of an intraocular lens (IOL) functionally taking the place of a lens whose transparency is deteriorated. SOLUTION: An image of an eye, which may be captured during pre-operative tests and provided to a program operable to calculate the power and axis orientation of the IOL, is used to determine the location and orientation of the IOL. This produces a placement guide used to properly center and orient an IOL within the eye. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide even and parallel light curtain to solve the problem wherein a linear light source of high-resolution optical liquid level for continuous monitoring of a system generally uses high-diffusion LED array, in order to achieve even light intensity, as a result, it will have a very large visual angle that the rays, i.e., light beams no longer become parallel. SOLUTION: The point source is located on focal point of parabolic reflector to illuminate the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point source to generate parallel light curtain. This parallel light curtain becomes parallel to the symmetric axis of the parabolic reflector, to illuminate ophthalmic surgery chamber for storing fluid. Sensor array, combined with the chamber, detects the parallel light curtain for illuminating the chamber and supplies an output to a sensing, processing, control system in order to determine the liquid level of the chamber. This optical method for determining the liquid level of surgical fluid has the advantage of preventing surgical fluid from physical contamination. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane scraper, which specifically affords a greater visibility to a surgeon in posterior ophthalmic surgery. SOLUTION: The membrane scraper comprises a handle and a cannula attached to the handle. The cannula contains a snare or loop of a metal or polymer wire that can be either of a fixed length or adjustable/retractable. At least a portion of the loop is roughened, either by roughening the loop material itself, or by coating the loop with an abrasive material, such as diamond power or similar abrasive material. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for controlling the flow of aspiration fluid in an aspiration chamber of a surgical cassette. SOLUTION: The aspiration chamber having an aspiration port 632 positioned at or close to the bottom of an aspiration chamber 624 is provided. When the aspiration fluid enters the aspiration chamber from below the fluid surface (e.g., from a port located at the bottom or on a sidewall close to the bottom), it does not create disturbance at the liquid/air interface and thus does not disturb continuous level sensing. Also, since the aspiration port is placed at or very close to the bottom of the aspiration chamber, the liquid inside the chamber can be fully used for sustained reflux and push priming. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water pouring/sucking system which is easy and reliable to reduce the surge of a fluid body. SOLUTION: The water pouring/sucking system is an operation system having a water pouring line and a sucking line, wherein both the lines have different compliances or hardnesses from each other, and the water pouring line has a higher compliance than the sucking line. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide-angle surgical illuminator for ophthalmology, not requiring high accuracy for manufacturing the surface of a lens used in the tip of the illuminator. SOLUTION: According to one embodiment, this gradient index surgical illuminator includes: a light source adapted to provide a light beam; an optical cable optically coupled to the light source for receiving and transmitting the light beam; a handpiece operably coupled to the optical cable; an optical fiber operably coupled to the handpiece and optically coupled to the optical cable for receiving and transmitting the light beam; an optical element including a gradient index lens, and optically coupled to the distal end of the optical fiber for receiving the light beam and transmitting the light beam to illuminate a surgical field; and a cannula, operably coupled to the handpiece, for housing and directing the optical fiber and the optical element. The optical element can be a small-gauge, divergent gradient index concave lens having a distal surface coincident with the distal end of the cannula. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical cassette having an acoustic air reflector. SOLUTION: A surgical cassette is provided which has a rigid fluid channel formed into a rigid plastic component or housing. The piezoelectric crystals of an ultrasonic flow meter are positioned on one side of the fluid channel. The side wall of the fluid channel opposite the piezoelectric crystals is exposed to fluid in the flow channel on its interior side and is exposed to ambient air on its exterior side. The interface between the wall and the air acts as an acoustic reflector for the action of the ultrasonic flow meter. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
