Abstract:
Provided is a method for making a supported metal catalyst. The method includes forming a mixture comprising a high surface area support, a reducing agent precursor that decomposes to produce reducing gases below about 1200 °C, and a metal catalyst precursor. The mixture is heated to a temperature sufficient to decompose the reducing agent precursor to produce a reducing agent, and then cooled to form the supported metal catalyst.
Abstract:
A method of preparing M-N-C catalysts utilizing a sacrificial support approach and inexpensive and readily available polymer precursors as the source of nitrogen and carbon is disclosed. Exemplary polymer precursors include non-porphyrin precursors with no initial catalytic activity. Examples of suitable non-catalytic non-porphyrin precursors include, but are not necessarily limited to low molecular weight precursors that form complexes with iron such as 4-aminoantipirine, phenylenediamine, hydroxysuccinimide, ethanolamine, and the like.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods of treating autophagy mediated diseases and disorders and related pharmaceutical compositions, diagnostics, screening techniques and kits. In one embodiment, the invention provides a method of determining whether a subject suffers from, or is at risk of developing, and autophagy mediated disease state and/or condition by evaluating LC3 levels.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides biological fuel cells comprising a paper-based fuel delivery layer which delivery fuel to the biological anode and cathode via capillary action and/or evaporation. In some embodiments the paper-based fuel delivery layer incorporates an outwardly extending fan-shaped region which enables a constant volumetric flow rate through the cell.
Abstract:
The invention provides immunotherapeutic and prophylactic bacteriophage viral-like particle (VLPs) which are useful in the treatment and prevention of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections and related disorders, including bronchiolitis and viral pneumonia. Related compositions (e.g, vaccines), nucleic acid constructs, and therapeutic methods are also provided. VLPs and related compositions of the invention induce high titer antibody responses against RSV. VLPs, VLP-containing compositions, and therapeutic methods of the invention induce an immunogenic response against RSV infection, confer immunity against RSV infection, protect against RSV infection, and reduce the likelihood of infection by RSV infection.
Abstract:
A dry powder inhaler including a housing defining a chamber for receiving a dose of powdered medicament, an inhalation port in fluid communication with the chamber, at least one airflow inlet providing fluid communication between the chamber and an exterior of the housing, and a flutter element in the chamber and associated with a dose of powdered medicament. The flutter element has a tensioned distal end proximate the at least one airflow inlet and a free proximal end opposite to the distal end and downstream of the inlet. The flutter element is configured to vibrate in response to airflow through the chamber and aerosolize the dose of powdered medicament.
Abstract:
In accordance with the invention, there are thermal switches, method of operating thermal switches and methods of forming thermal switches. A thermal switch can include a thin layer of liquid crystal disposed between a first surface of a first insulating substrate and a second surface of a second insulating substrate, wherein the liquid crystals are aligned at one or more of the first surface and the second surface due to surface preparation.
Abstract:
Ultra-thin hybrid and/or microporous materials and methods for their fabrication are provided. In one embodiment, the exemplary hybrid membranes can be formed including successive surface activation and reaction steps on a porous support that is patterned or non-patterned. The surface activation can be performed using remote plasma exposure to locally activate the exterior surfaces of porous support. Organic/inorganic hybrid precursors such as organometallic silane precursors can be condensed on the locally activated exterior surfaces, whereby ALD reactions can then take place between the condensed hybrid precursors and a reactant. Various embodiments can also include an intermittent replacement of ALD precursors during the membrane formation so as to enhance the hybrid molecular network of the membranes.
Abstract:
A simple, fast, selective and highly sensitive electrochemical method assay and disposable device for detection of viruses, bacteria, proteins, DNA, and/or organic/inorganic compounds. The sensor has a multi-layered construction, with each successive layer performing a different function. The design further allows for the packing of numerous microscopic electrode transducers onto the small footprint of a biochip device, allowing for a high-density array of sensors.
Abstract:
Active multifunctional nanoparticles provide significant enhancement of the efficacy of model therapeutic and gene agents due to increased diffusion and penetration through mucus and biologial barriers under the influence of a magnetic field.
