Novel 1,4-oxathiins of the formula in which n is 0 or 1 and R represents a C 7-15 bicycloaliphatic, tricycloaliphatic or tetracycloaliphatic radical are obtained by reacting 2,3-dihydro - 6 - methyl - 1,4 - oxathiin - 5- carboxylic acid chloride with the appropriate polycycloaliphatic amine, if required in the presence of a base. Specified values of R include bicyclo-heptyl, octyl and nonyl, tricyclo-decyl, undecyl and heptyl and tetracyclo-dodecyl radicals. The oxathiins possess herbicidal properties and are used in the conventional manner for the pre- and post-emergence control of weeds.
