Abstract: Disclosed herein are cement compositions and methods of using set-delayed cement compositions in subterranean formations. In one embodiment a method of plugging a wellbore is described. The method comprises providing a set-delayed cement composition comprising pumice, hydrated lime, a cement set retarder, and water; activating the set-delayed cement composition to produce an activated set-delayed cement composition; introducing the activated set-delayed cement composition into the wellbore; and allowing the activated set-delayed cement composition to form a plug in the wellbore that has a permeability of less than 0.1 millidarcy.

Abstract: Methods and systems directed to controlling the rheology of settable compositions in subterranean formations. Embodiments include a method of controlling the rheology of a set-delayed cement composition, the method comprising: providing a set-delayed cement composition comprising water, pumice, hydrated lime, and a set retarder; shearing the set-delayed cement composition in an amount sufficient to substantially prevent solids settling; storing the set-delayed cement in a pumpable fluid state for at least 1 day; activating the set-delayed cement composition; introducing the set-delayed cement composition into a subterranean formation; and allowing the set-delayed cement composition to set in the subterranean formation. Additional methods and systems are also provided.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are cement compositions and methods of using cement compositions in subterranean formations. An embodiment discloses a method of formulating a cement composition. The method may comprise measuring surface area of a group of pozzolans, wherein the smallest measured surface area of the group of pozzolans and the largest measured surface area of the group of pozzolans vary by about 50% or greater. The method may further comprise selecting one or more pozzolans from the group of pozzolans. The method may further comprise adding components comprising lime and water to the selected one or more pozzolans to form a cement composition.

Abstract: Dry cement blends that include inert microparticles may be used to produce cement slurries with a lower viscosity and a longer aging window. For example, a related method may include providing a cement dry blend comprising a plurality of cement particles and a plurality of inert microparticles, wherein the inert microparticles have an average diameter at least about 3 times smaller than that of the average diameter of the cement particles; mixing water, a set retarding additive, and the cement dry blend to yield a cement slurry; storing the cement slurry; mixing a cement set accelerator into the cement slurry; introducing the cement slurry into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation; and allowing the cement slurry to set at a location within the wellbore, the subterranean formation, or both.
