Abstract:
Methods, systems, and devices are described for managing wireless communications in a machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless Wide Area Network (WAN). A physical layer frame is generated. The frame being used for wireless M2M communications on a forward link in the M2M wireless WAN. The frame including no more than three channels. The physical layer frame including a first channel including paging channel, a second channel including a traffic channel, and a third channel including an acknowledgment (ACK) channel. A time division multiplexing (TDM) operation is performed on pilot symbols and data symbols to obtain a TDM pilot burst. At least one TDM pilot burst is inserted into each channel of the physical layer frame. The physical layer frame is transmitted on the forward link at a low data rate.
Abstract:
Techniques are provided which may be implemented in various methods, apparatuses, and/or articles of manufacture for use by a device that is operable in a plurality of modes, including "higher power mode" and a "lower power mode". A timing circuit may be set based, at least in part, on a phase value obtained from a signal from a ground-based transmitter, and operation of the device may be selectively transitioned to a lower power mode wherein the device uses the timing circuit. In certain example implementations, operation of the device to the lower power mode may be selectively transition and based, at least in part, on a determination that one or more attribute values satisfy a profile test indicating that the electronic device is likely to be within a characterized environment, and/or a determination that the electronic device is likely to be in a constrained motion state.
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for establishing communication links in a satellite based wireless communication system. The method includes: establishing a forward link from the satellite to at least one of a plurality of subscriber wireless communication devices (WCDs) by use of a shared frequency multi-user communication protocol; applying an error correction code to use in the forward link, whereby the error correction applies to an aggregation of communications provided to multiple ones of the WCDs; and receiving communications in a return link signal by use of a protocol providing channels having dedicated frequency assignments and non-slotted channel assignment.
Abstract:
Systems, methods and apparatus for configuring and accessing a random access channel in a CDMA communication system are disclosed. The number of users supported by a random access channel can be optimized by assigning a distinct time of arrival to each of a plurality of users. Each of the users can be time synchronized and can transmit data at a time that compensates for a propagation delay to allow the data to arrive at the destination receiver at the assigned time. In a CDMA system, each of the users can transmit data that is spread with the same spreading code, provided the cross correlation properties of the code are sufficient to allow identification of a source that is time offset relative to another user. The time of arrival can be determined based on the number of active users, and can be assigned as often as each transmission by each user.
Abstract:
According to a disclosed embodiment, a first plurality of pilot signals of a first polarization is received (304) and ranked (306). Subsequently, a second plurality of pilot signals of a second polarization is received (308) and ranked (310). Following, a pilot signal from the first and second plurality of pilot signals is selected based on a signal quality measurement (312) such as a signal to interference ratio. Moreover, a system can be constructed comprising antennas (124, 126) configured to receive pilot signals of a first and a second polarization. The system further comprises a receiver (120) configured to demodulate the pilot signals and a CPU (112) configured to rank the pilot signals and to select a pilot signal based on a signal quality measurement. Communication quality is improved by communicating with the base transceiver station transmitting the pilot signal providing the highest signal quality measurement.
Abstract:
Transmitter and receiver units for use in a communications system and configurable to provide antenna, frequency, or temporal diversity, or a combination thereof, for transmitted signals. The transmitter unit includes a system data processor, one or more modulators, and one or more antennas. The system data processor receives and partitions an input data stream into a number of channel data streams and further processes the channel data streams to generate one or more modulation symbol vector streams. Each modulation symbol vector stream includes a sequence of modulation symbol vectors representative of data in one or more channel data streams. Each modulator receives and modulates a respective modulation symbol vector stream to provide an RF modulated signal, and each antenna receives and transmits a respective RF modulated signal. Each modulator may include an inverse (fast) Fourier transform (IFFT) and a cyclic prefix generator. The IFFT generates time-domain representations of the modulation symbol vectors, and the cyclic prefix generator repeats a portion of the time-domain representation of each modulation symbol vector. The channel data streams are modulated using multi-carrier modulation, e.g., OFDM modulation. Time division multiplexing (TDM) may also be used to increase flexibility.

Techniques are provided which may be implemented in various methods, apparatuses, and/or articles of manufacture for use in and/or with an electronic device that is operable in a plurality of selectable power modes, including at least a higher power mode and a lower power mode. In an example implementation, with an electronic device operating in a higher power mode may selectively transition to a lower power mode based, at least in part, on at least phase value obtained from a signal acquired from a ground-based transmitter. Further techniques are provided which may be implemented to allow electronic device to selectively transition from a lower power mode to one or more other selectable power modes, e.g., including various medium power modes, and various "higher power modes".
Abstract:
An air to ground communication system provides internet access to aircraft from ground based stations. The air to ground system shares spectrum with uplink portions of a satellite communication spectrum. Interference mitigation techniques are employed to avoid interference between the ground based communications and satellite communications. Fade mitigation techniques are employed to provide communication to aircraft at low angles of elevation in the presence of rain.
Abstract:
A wireless communication device (WCD) used as a satellite telephone is provided with multiple antennas for communicating with its satellites. If signal quality is determined to be poor, then an evaluation is made as to whether switching antennas will result in an improvement in the communication link between the WCD and the satellite.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method are disclosed for digital authentication and verification. In one embodiment, authentication involves storing a cryptographic key and a look up table (LUT), generating an access code using the cryptographic key; generating multiple parallel BPSK symbols based upon the access code; converting the BPSK symbols into multiple tones encoded with the access code using the LUT; and outputting the multiple tones encoded with the access code for authentication. In another embodiment, verification involves receiving multiple tones encoded with an access code; generating multiple parallel BPSK symbols from the multiple tones; converting the BPSK symbols into an encoded interleaved bit stream of the access code; de-interleaving the encoded interleaved bit stream; and recovering the access code from the encoded de-interleaved bit stream.
