Abstract:
A lubricant composition comprises at least 0.1 % by weight of substantially spherical particles of a hard, abrasion-resistant and fracture-resistant, thermally stable and chemically inert material, and up to 99.9 % by weight of a supporting vehicle. The particles are preferably of silica-alumina ceramic material, and preferably have an average diameter of less than 250 mu m. Lubricants are suitable for most applications, but are especially useful for conditions of high temperature and pressure.
Abstract:
The title lubricant composition comprises a base oil or base grease and a specified amount of a heat insulating agent comprising (A) an inorganic compound undergoing endothermic melting at temperatures of 1200 DEG C or below and (B) an inorganic powder which neither melts nor decomposes at temperatures of 1200 DEG C or below and which has a thermal conductivity of 0.01 cal/cm.s. DEG C or less and a friction coefficient of 0.7 or less at room temperature added alone or as a combination. This lubricant composition has an excellent heat-insulating effect and is effective in preventing occurrence of thermal crown of working rolls.
Abstract:
A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles, as a minor component. The minor component preferably contains no metal or sulfur, and preferably no phosphorus. The encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles include an encapsulating material and a boron-containing compound encapsulated by the encapsulating material. The boron-containing compound is derived from a boron powder, a boron alkoxide, a boron oxide, a boric acid, a borane, or mixtures thereof. The encapsulating material is derived from a carboxylic acid selected from an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon oil; inorganic particles; and molybdenum disulfide; the molybdenum disulfide being dispersed in the soybean oil. Disclosed herein too is a lubricant composition comprising a base oil; inorganic particles; and metal disulfide particles; the metal disulfide particles being dispersed in the base oil in the presence of an electrical field and a mechanical field. Disclosed herein too is a method comprising agitating a composition to form a lubricating composition; the composition comprising molybdenum disulfide, inorganic particles and a base oil; the agitating being conducted in the presence of a magnetic field that is greater than the earth's field, an electrical field or a combination comprising the magnetic field and the electrical field.
Abstract:
An improved oil composition is disclosed. The oil composition includes a base oil comprising a hydrocarbon, the base oil having a base thermal conductivity. The oil composition also includes a first additive comprising a plurality of derivatized first additive nanoparticles dispersed within the base oil to form a modified oil having a modified thermal conductivity, wherein the modified thermal conductivity is greater than the base thermal conductivity. Alternately, an improved oil composition includes a base oil comprising a hydrocarbon and a first additive comprising a plurality of derivatized first additive nanoparticles dispersed within the base oil to form a modified oil comprising a stabilized suspension of the derivatized first additive nanoparticles in the base oil.
Abstract:
The metallurgical composition of a machine surface may be determined. Based on the composition of the surface layer and its substrate materials, a mixture of pure metal nanoparticles, each coated with a monomolecular organic layer adsorbed on its surface can be mixed with catalysts, reaction initiators, and/or other necessary ingredients for the repair action of the machine surface, depending on the specific machine, operational type, and/or the nature of the damage. The nanoparticles are applied to the machine surface, the organic monolayer wears away from the nanoparticles under shear stresses and the nanoparticles adhere to the machine surface to form a repair layer on the machine surface, thereby providing a repaired surface.

Abstract:
Organoclay compositions which comprise the reaction product of a smectite-type clay having an ion exchange capacity of at least 50 meq. wt. per 100 g. clay (active basis), and a branched chain quaternary ammmonium compound are useful self-activating and self-dispersing additives to liquid organic systems such as grease and ink formulations. Also included are grease and ink formulations using these organoclay compositions.
