    Abstract: An approach for processing voice calls over a packet switched network (105) as to efficiently utilize the functionalities of a Voice Response Unit (VRU) (113). According to one embodiment, a call originator (101), acting as a Use r Agent Client in accordance with the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), issue s messages to establish a first call-leg with the VRU (113). The VRU (113) performs digit collection to obtain information to authenticate the call originator (101) and to authorize the voice call. Based upon the issued messages from the call originator, the VRU establishes a second call-leg wit h the call terminator. The VRU is released from the voice call after binding t he call-legs to connect the call originator to the call terminator (103).

    Abstract: An approach for providing mirror servers (101, 103) of a primary server (109 ) to enhance efficient retrieval of web information is disclosed. A primary server (109) communicates with one or more secondary servers (i.e., mirror servers) (101, 103); the primary server (109) and the secondary servers (101 , 103) communicate with each other over a communication network (105), such as the public Internet. A user station (107) initially communicates with the primary server (109) to retrieve information. The primary server (109) determines a particular secondary server (101 or 103) based upon network analysis data. The network analysis data may optionally be stored as a cooki e in the user station (107). Thereafter, the primary server (109) instructs th e user station (107) to communicate with a particular secondary server (101 or 103) for subsequent requests. The secondary server (101 or 103) is selective ly synchronized with the primary server (109).

    Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for controlling customer resources for Internet protocol (IP) traffic delivery are disclosed. The network utilization of a group of endpoints on a network is tracked to generate group utilization level information corresponding to a current amount of network resource consumption by the group of endpoints. A request for network resources for a data flow for an endpoint in the group is received from a router associated with that endpoint. The request for network resources includes an identifier associated with the endpoint. A determination is made whether to accept the request based on the group utilization level information, the identifier, and a first predetermined profile associated with the group and including a first network utilization limit.

    Abstract: A system and method for routing a telephone call (10) on a PSTN network (14) to a data device (18). The present invention utilizes an automatic call processing system that has a one number location service. A called party provides a calling profile that is stored in the automatic call processing (ACP) system (16). When a call is placed to a telephone number that is assigned to the called party, the call is routed to the ACP system (16). The ACP system (16) calls each of the numbers of the calling profile for that called party until that party is reached. At least one of the destinations i n the calling profile is a logical address for a data network. The automatic call processing system (16) recognizes the logical address and queries a directory (22) to determine if an IP address has been registered in the directory for the logical address of the called party. If the called party i s using a data device (18) that is logged on the Internet (20), an IP telephon y agent (19), such as an IP telephony client running on the data device (18), registers the IP address of the data device (18) together with the logical address of the caller. If the ACP system (16) determines if an IP address is registered with the directory (22), the ACP system (16) will direct the call to an Internet telephony gateway(28). The gateway (28) encodes and packetize s the voice information for transmission over the data network (20) to the dat a device (18).

    Abstract: A state-of-polarization (SOP)-independent device (226, 326) and method for determining polyrization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical communication system having an optical transmission line (224, 324), including a detector (244, 344), coupleable to the optical transmission line (224, 324), where th e detector (244, 344) is capable of analyzing a pulse shape of an optical sign al on the optical transmission line to determine PMD of the optical signal. The pulse shape may comprise an eye diagram, which may contain a first peak and a second peak, due to PMD, where the PMD determined by the detector (244, 344) is a function of the distance between the detected first and second peaks which is indicative of a time delay between the detected first and second peaks. The device and method may also include a verifier (348) coupled to the corrector (246, 346), where the verifier (348) is capable of verifying that the corrector (246, 346) correct ly compensated the optical signal for the PMD.
