Abstract: A communication system includes a plurality of access terminals, and an acce ss network. The access network schedules a transmission of data in a time interval from one of the access terminals. The access network selects a multiple access transmission mode from a plurality of multiple access transmission modes, and broadcasts the selected multiple access transmission mode to the access terminals. The selected mode may include a mode in which data is code-division-multiplexed during the time interval, and modes in whi ch data is code-division-multiplexed during a first portion of the time interva l, and data is either time-division-multiplexed or orthogonal-frequency-divisio n- multiplexed during a second portion of the time interval.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for adaptive data rate selection in a high data rate (HDR) communication system are disclosed. An exemplary HDR communication system defines a set of data rates, at which an access point (AP) may transmit data packets to an access terminal (AT). The transmission data rate is selected to maintain target packet error rate (PER). Each AT monitors signal quality metric of signals received from APs. An AT receiving forward link signals from multiple ATs identifies the AT associated with the highest quality forward link signal.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for variable length Physical Layer (PL) packet generation. Multiple Security Layer (SL) packets may be multiplexed into a single PL packet to increase efficiency, wherein the SL packets may have variable lengths. In one embodiment, different format SL packets for different users are combined into capsules that form the PL packet. Shorter packets are for users in poor channel conditions or requiring smaller amounts of data due to the applications and the accompanying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In one embodiment, a modified Preamble structure provides for Unicast or multi-user packets. Alternate embodiment provides modified Rate Sets, a mechanism for identifying ACK from a single-user packet or a multiplexed packet (delayed ACK). ON/OFF keying for ACK channel v/s bi-polar keying used in IS-856, and/or multi-valued interpretation of DRC.

Abstract: An apparatus according to one embodiment of the invention includes a transmitter. The transmitter comprises a first gain element configured and arranged to modulate a radio-frequency signal according to a first gain fact or to produce a first output signal; and a second gain element configured and arranged to modulate the radio-frequency signal according to a second gain factor to produce a second output signal, wherein a magnitude of the first gain factor varies over time, and wherein a magnitude of the second gain factor varies over time with respect ot the magnitude of the first gain factor. Each of the modulated signals is coupled to a respective antenna. Th e combined radiation pattern of the antennas varies in an angular direction ov er time. In a system according to one embodiment of the invention, a base stati on including such an apparatus receives channel quality indications from mobile units and schedules data transmissions to the mobile units accordingly.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating maximum rate of data and for estimating a transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data i n a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal then estimates the maximum rate of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal then estimates transmission power requir ed for transmission of a data with a rate of data in accordance with the rate o f data and the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be pre- determined or dynamically adjusted. The terminal dynamically adjusts the quality metric margin in accordance with a result of comparison of a transmi t power corresponding to the estimated maximum rate of data with an actual transmit power used to transmit the data.
