Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a wireless communication device and method for using the device. The wireless communications device may be used by accessing information in memory, the information relating to the location of a first communications network. The information is based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network and is used to determine whether the wireless communications device is in the vicinity of the first communications network.

Abstract: A method for maintaining a fingerprint for a wireless network (104) is provided. A first fingerprint is stored at a wireless communications device (102). The first fingerprint identifies a location (B) corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network. When the wireless communications device (102) is within the location (B), a second fingerprint is determined based on a current measurement by the wireless communication device (102) of the one or more reference signals. Then the first fingerprint is modified based on the second fingerprint.

Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device that measures characteristics or attributes of a first communications network that vary according to physical location within that first communications network to create a fingerprint, or signature, of a location within the first communications network. When the fingerprint of the current location of the mobile device is created it can be compared to a known fingerprint associated with a second communication network to determine the mobile device's proximity to the second communications network. For example, the first communications network may be a CDMA wide area wireless communication network and the second communications network may be a 802.11 wireless LAN.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate distributing and/or utilizing a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG) Identifier (ID) that identifies a CSG corresponding to a base station and a CSG indication that distinguishes between the base station permitting access to members of the CSG and permitting access to members and non-members of the CSG. For instance, the CSG ID can uniquely identify the CSG corresponding to the base station. A mobile device can receive the CSG ID and the CSG indication from the base station. Further, the received CSG ID can be compared to CSG IDs included in an allowed CSG list to recognize whether the mobile device is a member or a non-member of the CSG. Moreover, a preference for selecting the base station as compared to a disparate base station can be generated as a function of the received CSG ID and CSG indication.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate device-side access point list management. Blacklists of access points unsuitable for providing network access to a related mobile device can be maintained as well as whitelists of suitable access points. The lists can be managed using an interface provided at the mobile device. In addition, lists can be modified according to provisioned network updates. Also, the lists can be of maximum size such that older entries can be purged upon insertion of newer entries based on a number of factors; timed entry deletion is provided as well. Access points in the lists can be stored and presented according to various identifiers related to the access points.

Abstract: Cellular network may introduce a large number of limited access/limited range ("small") base stations deployed by end-users such as home base nodes (HNBs) or Femtocells that provide access to access terminals (ATs) or user equipment (UE) to a core network. A selective discovery approach enables UE to discover and to use a small base station without wasting power to discover an alien base station or to search when not within range of any open small base station. Discovery can entail location-dependent determination (e.g., macro base station triangulation, global positioning system, local broadcast channel, etc.) of being within range of an open femtocell whose identity was manually learned, accessed via a distributed neighbor list, etc. The UE can advantageously tolerate small changes in location without having to relearn the identity of the femtocell. The type of access afforded is advantageously communicated to end user via a display indicator.
