    Abstract: In an ion exchanger having a single upright tank with upper and lower stratified beds of resins respectively adapted to absorbing different ions (cations or anions) of the same ionic polarity, a distributor for the inflow of water into the tank is disposed substantially at the interface between the two beds and used to effect the upward backwashing of the upper bed alone and, during regeneration of weak-and-strong-type exchange resins by the same regenerant passed successively through the beds of strong-andweak-type resins, to dilute the regenerant to the concentration best suited for regeneration of the weak-type resin.
