The present invention provides for concentrated aqueous silk fibroin solutions and an all-aqueous mode for preparation of concentrated aqueous fibroin solutions that avoids the use of organic solvents, direct additives, or harsh chemicals. The invention further provides for the use of these solutions in production of materials, e.g., fibers, films, foams, meshes, scaffolds and hydrogels.

The invention relates to a process producing porous powdery polymer particles. A homogeneous mixture having two components minimum, one a meltable polymer, the other fluid inert to the polymer, both forming a system having a range of complete miscibility and a miscibility gap are introduced to a bed of solid-substance particles, then cooling the mixture to below solidification of the polymer and comminuting the obtained cake-like mass. The polymer is separated then from the inert fluid and solid-like substance particles.

The present invention relates to ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) articles comprising a porous UHMWPE polymer structure with an at least trimodal pore distribution and to a process for its preparation which comprises using at least a porogen agent as well as a solvent for generating the porosity. The resulting UHMWPE-type polymer article is well suited for medical implants and/or scaffolds among other applications.

There are provided methods of producing a component incorporating a bioactive material. In one embodiment the method comprises:(a) using a screw extruder to mix a polymeric material (I) with a bioactive material (II) and melt the polymeric material (I); and (b) making a component by moulding; and wherein the polymeric material (I) is of a type which includes:(i) phenyl moieties; (ii) ketone moieties; and (iii) ether moieties. Also provided are components comprising a polymeric material and a bioactive material.
