Abstract:
A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition and a process for preparing multi-layered coated articles coated with a pigmented or colored base coat and a transparent or clear topcoat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the base coat. The transparent topcoat composition is a flexible, curable film-forming composition comprising (i) a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## (ii) a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester polymer, a polyurethane polymer, an acrylic polymer, and mixtures thereof wherein each polymer contains a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure depicted above; and (iii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the film-forming composition contains a polyester polymer derived from a cycloaliphatic acid or anhydride. The topcoat composition provides a flexible composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as a topcoat for plastic automotive parts.

Flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming compositions and multi-component composite coating compositions comprising at least one pigmented or colored base coat and at least one transparent clear coat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a clear coat to the base coat. Both the colored base coat and the clear coat are flexible, curable film-forming compositions having an aminoplast crosslinking agent, and the base coat and optionally the clear coat has carbamate functional polymers. The flexible, multi-component composite coating compositions provide improved durability, water spotting resistance, and/or acid etch resistance, making the composite coatings particularly useful for plastic automotive parts.
Abstract:
Non liquid-crystalline esterphenol-capped liquid polymer and polyol compositions in combination with an amino crosslinking agent endow coating compositions containing them with the ability of providing films having superior properties. The esterphenol-capped polymers and polyols can be prepared by direct esterification of hydroxybenzoic acid without its decarboxylation.

Abstract:
A new transesterification catalyst comprises an epoxide and a non-acidic nucleophilic onium salt.Coating compositions having hydroxyl functional resin components and carboxylic ester components adapted for curing by transesterification following application to a substrate are formulated with in-situ formed cure catalyst comprising a non-acidic nucleophile and an epoxide-to-product coatings that readily cure by transesterification. Such coatings including polyesters, polyepoxides, and polyacrylates are useful in formulating high solids coatings and powder coatings having exceptional physical properties.Extremely low-temperature cure coatings were obtained by transesterifying mixtures of polyols and polymeric esters having multiple activated ester linkages having the structure ##STR1## wherein R' is lower alkyl and Y is --OH and O-alkyl radicals. These coatings provide low-temperature cure coatings for paper, plastic, and wood in addition to metal substrates.
