Abstract: A visual impairment device includes a power supply, an intense light source having two or more beams of intense light with different peak wavelengths and a wavelength bandwidth less than 50 nm, a modulator and a control circuit. The modulator operates to modulates the two or more beams of intense light to produce a spatial array such that at least one of the beams used to produce the spatial array has the requisite irradiance to cause visual impairment. In some examples, the beams of intense light are laser beams. Also included are methods of using the device to cause visual impairment of an intruder who enters a visual impairment zone created by said device.

Abstract: An electronic optical device 100 includes a first active absorptive polariser 110 that electronically alters absorption of a first polarisation of light P1 depending on an applied first voltage, and a second active absorptive polariser 120 that electronically alters absorption of a second polarisation of light P2 depending on an applied second voltage, wherein the second polarisation is orthogonal to the first. A static reflective polariser 130 is interposed between the active polarisers, reflecting the first polarisation of light. The device may switch between a transmissive, dark, reflective or hybrid transmissive-reflective state. One or both of the active absorptive polarisers may optionally be patterned into segments (Fig.3). The absorber may comprise a dichroic light absorber and a liquid crystal host. A dichroic dye moiety may be covalently attached to the liquid crystal host. Various absorption spectra may be applied in the 400-1000 nm (visible – near infrared) range. At least one polariser may be a graduated electrooptic device (Fig. 4).

Abstract: A switchable one-way mirror device dividing first and second spaces includes a switchable electro-optic layer facing the second space and configured to be electronically switchable between a transmissive state and one or more opaque states, and a partial reflector incorporated within or adjacent the switchable electro-optic layer and facing the first space and configured to partially reflect light. The switchable one-way mirror partially transmits a first light going from the first space to the second space, and a second light going from the second space to the first space. When the switchable electro-optic layer is in an opaque state, transmission of light through the device is reduced thereby changing the ratio between the transmission of the second light to the first space and the reflection of the first light by the partial reflector resulting in reduced visibility of the second space by a viewer in the first space.

Abstract: A method of producing an optical gradient effect includes providing an optical device having one or more spatially variable optical response characteristics. The optical device includes one or more individual liquid crystal cells, wherein each individual cell includes i) a liquid crystal material contained between a single pair of substrates, each substrate having a transparent conductive layer provided thereon, ii) an electrode connection contacting each transparent conductive layer, and iii) a driving signal source in electrical communication with each electrode connection. The method includes applying a driving signal from the driving signal source to the electrode connections to create a voltage gradient in a gradient direction along the pair of transparent conductive layer leading away from the electrode connections. The voltage gradient is received by the liquid crystal material to produce the gradient effect in at least one optical response characteristic across at least a portion of the optical device.

Der umschaltbare Einwegspiegel überträgt teilweise ein erstes Licht, das vom ersten Bereich zum zweiten Bereich geht, und ein zweites Licht, das vom zweiten Bereich zum ersten Bereich geht. Wenn sich die umschaltbare elektrooptische Schicht in einem undurchlässigen Zustand befindet, wird die Lichttransmission durch die Vorrichtung hindurch verringert, wodurch das Verhältnis zwischen der Transmission des zweiten Lichts zum ersten Bereich und der Reflexion des ersten Lichts durch den Teilreflektor verringert wird, was zu einer verringerten Sicht des zweiten Bereichs durch einen Betrachter im ersten Bereich führt.
