Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus for applying a coating material to a wire, the apparatus comprising: a coating chamber for applying a thermosetting coating material to a wire passing through the coating chamber; an elongate injection channel for receiving coating material input to the coating apparatus at a first end of the injection channel and supplying the received coating material to the coating chamber that is arranged at a second end of the injection channel; and, a number of heating elements controllable to progressively raise the temperature of the coating material as the coating material flows through the coating apparatus to achieve a desired viscosity of the coating material within the coating chamber. Advantages of this solvent-free technique include providing an industrial process for applying a coating to a wire that is easier, safer and cheaper than known solvent-based techniques.

Abstract: In a coating testing system, a spectrometer probe is positioned adjacent to a polymer-coated object (201), maybe at a fixed distance and orientation. Chemometric analysis is performed on spectra acquired using the probe, to measure a property of the coating (203, 205). In an aspect, spectra from a plurality of coating materials are pre-processed and used to create a correlation model correlating the spectra to coating material properties, perhaps validated using validation spectra. In an aspect, a probe holder holds the probe adjacent to the object, and coating properties are determined in real time. In an aspect, the object is a wire, and a channel of the apparatus receives coated wire. The object may be fed through the system, which may perform the coating process. The measured properties may be used for real-time control of the coating process via a feedback loop. The spectrometer may be a near-infra-red spectrometer.
