Abstract: A magnetometer includes a support having two support surfaces that intersect each other along an intersection line that is perpendicular to a reference axis of the magnetometer. The support surfaces are preferably perpendicular to each other and are each inclined at an angle of 45 degrees to the reference axis. A planar sensor/detector array is mounted on each support surface. Each array includes at least two pairs of magnetic field sensors and associated SQUID detectors arranged such that the magnetic field sensors lie on a line that is parallel to the intersection line of the two support surfaces. The magnetometer can be used adjacent to a surface to measure components and spatial variation of the magnetic field near the surface, with the measured components resolved into the magnetic field vectors parallel to and perpendicular to the surface.

Abstract: A SQUID package includes a layered SQUID base (24) and a SQUID (22) mounted upon the base. The SQUID base is formed as a first substrate layer (30) of an electrically insulating material, a shielding layer (28) of a material that is superconducting at the SQUID operating temperature overlying the first substrate layer, and a second substrate layer (26) of an electrically insulating material overlying the shielding layer. The shielding layer protects the SQUID from dc and ac interference such as magnetic and electrical fields, which would otherwise interfere with its operation.

Abstract: A shielded room (20) is constructed by mechanically attaching electrically conducting facing sheets (32) to the beams (30) of a frame in a manner such that there is a continuous electrical current flow path (44) between the facing sheets. The mechanical interfaces in the current flow path are sealed with a layer of copper or zinc (34) at the interface, the copper or zinc layer being preferably applied to one or both of the pieces that meet at the interface by a spraying technique such as plasma spraying. The copper or zinc connector seal ensures a continuous current flow path along the length of the mechanical interface, and prevents leakage of electromagnetic energy into the interior of the room. A magnetic field barrier such as sheets (48) of mu-metal can be supported on the assembled structure. The room (20) is readily assembled with mechanical fasteners (42), which permits it to be later disassembled and moved if necessary.

Abstract: A biomagnetometer (10) includes a magnetic field sensor unit including a magnetic field pickup coil (12). A vessel (16) contains the sensor unit. The vessel (16) includes a flexible contact face (e.g., 240) with the magnetic field sensor unit mounted in the interior of the vessel (16) adjacent to the flexible contact face. Pickup units using this structure can be connected together into flexible or rigid arrays.
