Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining the quality of a sample gas, especially a combustion gas, using a transmission spectrum of the sample gas which is determined by means of spectroscopic measuring procedures under operating conditions. In a measurement of state, at least the values corresponding to the pressure p and temperature T of the sample gas are determined and a spectral vector S is formed in a number of selected spectral areas by integrating values from the transmission spectrum of the sample gas, said spectral vector having as its components the values of the integrals through the selected spectral ranges and being characteristic of the composition of the sample gas in the operating mode. The spectral vectorSis then scalarly multiplied with a factor vectorV, said factor vector having been established through calibration measurements of spectral vectors Swith calibration gases of known compositions and under known state conditions; in order to determine a physical variable to be determined in relationship to the gas quality.
