Abstract: A light source assembly (18) and method of providing illumination on a target surface utilize a fluorescent material to generate composite "white" light (38) from source light (36) of a particular color, i.e., a particular wavelength. The light source assembly is optimally designed for use in scanning devices (10), such as flat-bed color scanners, in which linear illumination is necessary to capture images, graphics, and/or text from a target scanned surface. In the preferred embodiment, the light source assembly includes a Gallium Nitride (GaN) based light emitting diode (LED) (26) that emits blue source light and a light transmitting rod lens (28; 50; 54; 56). The light transmitting rod lens is preferably a solid transparent structure, designed to receive the blue source light through one end of the rod and transmit a composite "white" light from the entire length of the rod, providing the desired linear illumination. The rod lens includes two fluorescent strips (30 and 32) and a non-fluorescent strip (34), located near the exterior surface of the rod. The two fluorescent strips operate to absorb the blue source light and to emit red light (40) and green light (42), while the non-fluorescent strip reflects the blue source light. The emitted red and green light, along with the reflected blue light (44), form the composite light that provides the linear illumination on the target surface.

Abstract: In a computerized method, performance data collected while a computer system executed instructions of a program are analyzed. The method collects performance data while executing the program. The performance data includes sample counts of instructions executed. The program is analyzed to determine classes of instructions. Instructions of the same equivalence class all execute the identical number of times. The execution frequencies for each instruction of each equivalence class is estimated. The estimated execution frequencies can then be used to the average number of cycles required to issue each instruction of each equivalence class. The average number of cycles can be compared with the minimum number of cycles to determine the number of dynamic stall cycles incurred by the instructions. Furthermore, reasons for the dynamic stall cycles can be inferred.

Abstract: Payment indicia generating schemes are described that enable users to customize the appearance of the payment indicium and to accommodate a wide variety of validation processing environments, while providing a substantial defense against fraudulent photocopy attack. In some embodiments, a corroborative digital token is generated from payment information, and a base image is modulated with a graphical encoding of the corroborative digital token to produce a payment indicium. In some embodiments, a payment indicium containing embedded payment information is rendered on a printing surface with a printing characteristic that degrades with photographic reproductions such that the embedded payment information is extractable from an original rendering of the payment indicium but is un-extractable from a photographic reproduction of an original rendering of the payment indicium. In some embodiments, payment information is encoded into a corroborative digital token based at least in part upon one or more variable encoding parameters, and a payment indicium containing the encoded payment information is rendered.
