Abstract:
This invention relates to a use of a non-woven thermoplastic resin in combination with a curable moulding material comprising a fibrous reinforcement material and a thermoset resin material by bringing the thermoplastic resin in contact with the curable moulding material during or following assembly of the moulding material. The thermoplastic resin has a melting point below the gel temperature of the thermoset resin material to reduce the void fraction and increase the ILSS of a cured moulding manufactured from said moulding material forming a laminate structure in comparison to a cured moulding manufactured from said moulding material in which the fabric is absent forming the laminate structure.
Abstract:
A method of controlling a process for the manufacture of a multicomponent sheet material having a desired pre-determined parameter comprising applying electromagnetic energy to interact with the sheet material whereby the interaction modifies the applied energy, detecting the modified energy, comparing the modified energy or data derived from it with data relating to the pre-determined parameter and modifying at least one step of the process whereby the data relating to the modified energy is modified towards the data relating to the predetermined parameter.
Abstract:
A tape for use in automated tape laying machines that includes a multi-layer substrate composed of a plastic layer that includes at least one plastic film having an outer film surface and an inner film surface. The plastic film is adhered to a fibrous layer so that the inner surface of the fibrous layer is bonded to the inner film surface. An uncured composite material layer composed of a fibrous reinforcement and an uncured resin matrix is releasably adhered to either the plastic layer surface or the outer fiber layer surface to provide a tape suitable for use in an automatic tape layer.
Abstract:
Epoxy formulations comprising a polyfunctional epoxy resin, a solid bisphenol A epoxy resin, a phenolic end capped bisphenol A resin, a rubber epoxy adduct and a curative are provided as is their use in prepregs and as matrix materials in laminates of metal foil and fibre reinforced epoxy resins.
Abstract:
One or more layers of structured thermoplastic polymer, such as a light weight veil of thermoplastic polymer fibers, are located within the interleaf zone of laminates that are composed of fibrous layers and thermosetting resin. The thermoplastic veils are used in the interleaf zones as a replacement for thermoplastic toughening particles.
Abstract:
A laminate or structure which comprises a conductive layer, a fibrous layer and a support layer adhering to an outer face of the laminate or structure, the support layer preventing distortion of the conductive layer during slitting of the laminate or structure to form a conductive strip.
Abstract:
A strip of curable prepreg comprising unidirectional fibres aligned with the length of the strip, the fibres being at least partially impregnated with curable thermosetting resin and comprising a flexible polymeric sheet on an outer face of the strip, wherein the strip has a substantially rectangular cross-section defining a width and a thickness of the strip.
Abstract:
A sheet-like composite material comprising a structural layer and curable thermosetting resin, and comprising a fibre-reinforced backing paper on one of its external faces.
Abstract:
A process for the production of a fibre reinforced thermoset resin. The process comprises impregnating a structural fibrous layer with a liquid thermosetting resin composition to form a prepreg, and subsequently curing the thermosetting resin, wherein at the time of impregnation an additional resin component is provided separately to the prepreg, the thermosetting resin composition being free of said additional resin component other than the thermosetting resin, and additional resins are provided to become integrated with the thermosetting resin during curing.
Abstract:
An adhesive composition comprising a silane-modified epoxy resin, a dicyclopentadiene novolac epoxy resin and a curing agent. The composition shows good oily steel bonding, even in the absence of CTBN rubber or rubber adducts as toughening agents, with good Tg values of the cured resin and good Tg retention after hot wet aging.
