Class 46 A filter comprising a stack of units each comprising an annular space in communication with the inside of the filter casing and another annular space in communication with the interior of a hollow spindle for the elements is characterized chiefly in that the hollow spindle consists of a rod and a coaxial stack of inner perforated rings forming part of the filter units and has access to the exterior through a wall of the casing, and in that the plates separating all the annular spaces are alternately pervious and impervious. As shown the filtering body comprises a series of inner rings 17, 18 and a series of outer rings 22, 23 maintained concentric about a rod 7 by an upper plate 20 fitting closely on the rod and by a lower plate 19 having an aperture larger than the rod but kept in position by a perforated disc 14 welded to the rod 7. Annular pervious discs 24 and impervious discs 25 are secured alternately between adjacent sets of rings by the clamping action of a wing nut 10 bearing upon the upper plate 20. The rod 7 is held at the bottom by a nut 11 which bears against an outlet member 12 which in turn bears against a bush 13 welded to the underside of a lower plate 5 of an outer casing 1. The top plate 4 of the casing 1 is secured by a nut 8 screwing on to an upper rod portion 7a welded to the nut 10. An inlet 31 and support 2, 3 are provided. The discs 24 may be of filtering material or may provide support for filtering material, e.g. filter paper. Liquid passes from the inlet 31 into the casing 1 and then through holes 28a in the plate 1 and series of holes 28 in alternate outer rings 23 into alternate annular spacers 26. It flows downwards through the discs 24, inwards through series of holes 29 in alternate inner rings 17, down the annular channel formed between the inner rings and the rod 7, through the annular space between the plate 19 and the rod 7, through holes 16 in the disc 14, into the space 13a and out through the member 12.

The charge is admitted to the inside of the tube D and flows through ports D to certain of the annular compartments, passing through the ports K to the cylinders. The exhaust enters other annular compartments and escapes by the ports J. In the multicylinder engine shown, the valve is formed in two parts united by dog-clutch connections F to a central member E, to which the charge is admitted through ports L. The driving-spindle P is formed with a flange O having dog-clutch connection to the sleeve C. Specification 153,360 is referred to.
