    Abstract: A stabilizing system stabilizes light-weight articles carried on conveyors for automated bulk processing equipment. In a preferred embodiment, the light-weight articles, such as, for example, tobacco leaf products or wood chips, are moved and stabilized along a conveyor from a first infeed end to a second discharge end where they are projected in-air along a trajectory through an illumination station and sorting station. An enclosed off-belt housing is provided within which the light-weight articles are projected along a controlled trajectory to be processed by the optical inspection and sorting systems.

    Abstract: A high speed mass flow food sorting apparatus (10) and method comprises a product conveyor (12) for receiving and conveying a laterally-distributed stream of bulk food articles (14) past a product diverter (72). A camera (28 ) is positioned to view the stream of food articles upstream of a product diverter (72). A sorting system downstream of a camera (28) including a product diverter (72) is configured to divert undesirable product in respons e to optically detected undesirable characteristics pursuant to an automated control system. The automated control system connects to the optical inspection system and the sorting system and includes an operator control console. Preferably, the operator control console displays a graphical user interface (32) via a computer (27) on which the control system is implemente d and includes a software application pack (30) specifically configured for processing a particular type of food article having corresponding desirable features.

    Abstract: Described herein is an automated quality inspection station for evaluating color component characteristics of a product. The inspection station includes a color video camera, for capturing video frames of product images, and a control system for analyzing those video frames. The control system is programmed to perform a reference calibration and then a sample calibration. During the reference calibration an operator identifies component type areas from a displayed reference frame of a typical product assortment. The control system calculates color value density curves from the identified areas. The density curves are then calibrated to each other by scaling each of the density curves by a scaling factor. The scaling factors can either be provided directly by the operator or default values can be calculated by the control system. Default scaling factor values are calculated by summing the product of the corresponding density curve and an overall histogram of a sample video frame over a range of color values. Individual pixels are classified as one of a plurality of component types according to the highest calibrated density curve at the pixels' color value.

Automated sorting logic is responsive to the upstream camera to individually determine optical characteristics of each food article. The product diverter is responsive to the automated sorting logic to divert a portion of the food articles from the stream depending upon their individual optical characteristics. The apparatus also includes a downstream camera positioned to view the stream of food articles downstream of the product diverter. A data processor is responsive to both the upstream camera and the downstream camera to periodically examine samples of food articles and to calculate upstream and downstream quality statistics regarding the stream of food articles. The data processor is programmed to compare the calculated upstream and downstream quality statistics to derive diverted product quality statistics regarding the food articles diverted by the product diverter. The data processor also calculates settings for the automated sorting logic based upon the calculated quality statistics.
