Abstract:
A process for the preparation of water insoluble bio-release micronutrient fertilizers, containing iron and manganese with either zinc and/or copper, comprising (a) heating orthophosphoric acid at a temperature of 130°C-150°C with a mixture of (i) source of iron oxide, (ii) manganese dioxide or pyrolusite, and (iii) either or both compounds of zinc or copper selected from zinc ash or zinc oxide and cupric oxide, or cupric sulphate or cupric chloride and (iii) a basic compound such as oxide or carbonate of magnesium or calcium, to produce a multi-metallic polyphosphate; (b) neutralisation of the polyphosphate with a basic compound followed by drying and pulverisation to obtain a solid powdery material.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I), wherein X and X' each represents hydrogen or together represent a bridging group -CH2-, -CH2-CH2- or -O-; R1 is a 6-carboxyhex-2-enyl group or a modification thereof in which the group is altered by one, or an appropriate combination of two or more, of the following: (a) alteration of the position of the double bond, with the proviso that in the modified group the double bond is not in the alpha-beta position relative to the ring; (b) reduction of the double bond; (c) alteration of the chain length through a decrease of one or two methylene groups or an increase of one to six methylene groups; (d) replacement of one or two methylene groups each separately by an oxygen or sulphur atom, with the proviso that in the modified group no oxygen or sulphur atom is in an alpha position relative to either a doubly bonded carbon atom or to the carboxy group or a derivative thereof and that at least 2 carbon atomes separate any pair of oxygen and/or sulphur atoms; and (e) formation of an amide, ester or salt derivative of the carboxy group; R2 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group substituted by an aromatic group directly or through an oxygen or sulphur atom; and R3, R4, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen, or R3 and R4 together and/or R5 and R6 together represent the second bond of a carbon-carbon double bond; comprises effecting a Diels Alder reaction between a diene of formula (II) and a dienophile of formula (III), wherein X, X' and R2 are as defined for (I); Y is R1 or a precursor therefor in which a double bond is present and/or the terminal group is in different form, either being a free carboxy group rather than the carboxy group derivative present in R1 or being a carboxy group derivative rather than the free carboxy group present in R1; and R and R' are either each hydrogen or together represent the third bond of a carbon-carbon triple bond; and where appropriate thereafter, in either order, reducing the double bond or bonds in the ring of the Diels Alder adduct and/or converting the group Y to the group R1. The compounds prepared by this process are of value as intermediates for the preparation of biologically active compounds.
Abstract:
An alloy of composition (by mole) around Fe80B15Si5 with additions of up to 4 mole % Ag or Cu or up to 2% Zn or mixtures thereof when rapidly cooled solidifies to a non-crystalline glass structure, which is ductile and magnetically "soft", i.e. offering a reasonable saturation magnetisation yet with low losses. Exemplary glassy alloy: Fe79.5B15Si5Cu0.5.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A syringe is provided comprising a barrel (10) open at one end, a piston (20) sealably located in the barrel and being partly formed by a membrane (23), a plunger (30) slidable into the barrel to engage and move the piston, and a needle (40) projecting through the plunger into and out of the barrel. A material to be dispensed is located between the barrel and piston, and plunger movement causes the needle to pierce the membrane and also causes the piston to move to eject material through the needle. Preferably a protective cap (50) is connected with the barrel to cover the plunger/needle projection. Typically the dispensed material is pharmaceutical and it can be maintained sterile by suitable sealing of the piston and/or cap with the barrel. The plunger can interlock with the piston to allow withdrawal movement useful in intravenous injection. Also the barrel closed end can include another membrane (62) allowing mixture of another material, such as a solvent or diluent liquid.
Abstract:
Oriented thermoplastics having enhanced properties such as Young's modulus, resistance to creep, resistance to gas transport are prepared by drawing the thermoplastic in the solid phase through a die so that its plastic strain is progressively increased during start-up.
Abstract:
In apparatus for sensing and controlling the deposition of a thin film on to a substrate (12) from a gas or vapour phase, the optical reflectance or transmittance is sensed, the resonant frequency of a crystal (14) also exposed to the deposition is sensed, and the quotient of the change in each signal over a predetermined time interval is determined. The deposition can be terminated at a suitable thickness, for example a reflectance or transmittance maximum or minimum. Instead of an optical property, the electrical resistivity of the film may be sensed and used in the same way.
Abstract:
A surface on which there is a regular periodic pattern, often a relief pattern (12), is deformed, and in-plane deformation is sensed by illuminating the deformed pattern with a beam (12) of coherent light so that light is reflected as one zero order beam and a plurality of diffracted beams, and combining two of the beams (16, 18) so that they interfere in a manner related to the deformation along the direction of intersection of the surface plane with the plane in which the two interfering beams lie. The magnitude and direction of in-plane deformation in one or more directions and the magnitude and direction of the maximum in-plane stress or strain, can be determined automatically.
