Abstract: Element suitable for motion under ultra-high vacuum conditions, especially a compressor or valve for apparatus for producing polarized gases, includes at least one component moveable in a housing, where the component is moved from an outer space via an intermediate space to an inner space in a way that ingress of volatiles from the outer chamber to the inner space is prevented by sealing rings. Independent claims are included for: (a) apparatus for producing nuclear spin polarized media, including a device for optical pumping in a low pressure plasma, a compressor for the polarized medium and a storage volume, where the compressor includes at least one element as above; and (b) a method for producing nuclear spin polarized gases, involving optical pumping in low pressure plasma, mechanical compression of the gas and supply to a storage volume, where fractional pumping is used for the mechanical compression.

Abstract: A method for recovering very small amounts of noble gases, specifically helium-3, from gas mixtures uses an apparatus that includes at least one adsorption and/or absorption device containing at least one molecular sieve (MS). The adsorption and/or absorption device is first cooled to below 293, preferably 100, K, then the gas mixture passed through it and those gases that are not retained on MS are collected in a special vessel. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for performing the method.
