    Abstract: 4053. Rosenthal, J. H. Feb. 18. Marine and water-tube boilers; superheaters, steam.-Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a plan partly in section of a combined marine water-tube boiler of the Babcock- &-Wilcox type and a steam superheater. A skeleton boiler is formed by four series of pipes B, D, E, and G connecting, as shown, the drum A and headers C, D , and F. The sides of the hollow space thus formed are formed also by inclined water tubes. The superheater is formed by V-tubes J, M occupying the space enclosed by the water tubes and springing from a series of vertical manifolds K which are alternately connected to a steam-inlet pipe L and a steam-outlet pipe L'.

    Abstract: 15,866. Rosenthal, J. H. Aug. 7. Plates, securing tubes to; ferrule extractors. -The tubes of surface condensers, feedwater heaters, and the like are secured by ferrules having a plain portion C, within and with which the tube A is expended into the tube-plate, and an externally or internally screwed portion C' by which the ferrules may be withdrawn without injuring the tube. The withdrawal is effected by a draw-bolt D having a screwed end or socket to engage the ferrule and passing through a bridge-piece E. The bolt D has a nut F bearing on the bridge, by turning which the ferrule is withdrawn.

    Abstract: 15,914. Rosenthal, J. H. July 5. Water-tube boilers.-Relates to boilers specially adapted for - torpedo boats and small craft. Inclined close-ended water-tubes depend from the steam drum on each side of the furnace. The tubeplate B of the drum is dished out in order to provide flattened surfaces for the reception of the tubes. Within the tubes smaller water-circulating and open-ended pipes C are fitted, being supported by the tray K over which the entering feed is sprayed. In a modification, the lower surface of the drum is stepped, whereby increased strength is obtained. In another form, the flattened tubeboxes are attached to the under-surface of the drum. Usual furnace fittings and casings are provided, as also the troughs H for carrying off water when emptying the boiler.

    Abstract: 22,606. Rosenthal, J. H. Oct, 2. Water-tube boilers; feedwater, heating and purifying.-Relates to boilers more especially adapted for marine purposes. The feedwater - purifying drum A is constructed as an integral part of the boiler. By this means, impurities are removed before the water enters the circulatory system. Feedwater is sprayed from the check valve D into the drum. The drum A, which is connected above the water level to the main steam and water drum by the pipe C, is crossed by partitions I, I , some of which rest upon the bottom of the drum, while others are arranged at the water level. These partitions or obstacles assist in preventing the impurities from reaching the two downcomers F, one at each end of the drum. The downcomers open either to the transverse chamber G from which the headers rise, or to mud chambers, one at each end of the lower portion of the headers.

Steam-generator furnaces.-Relates to water-tube boilers of the Babcock and Wilcox type, and consists, in the case of a single-ended boiler, in replacing one set of headers by an upper steam and water drum connected to a lower water drum ; or in a double ended boiler, those drums are arranged centrally and connected to the two sets of headers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the boiler comprises a steam drum A connected by downcomers E to the water-drum B. The boiler may be fired either axially or transversely. The height of the furnace front makes the boiler specially adaptable for oil fuel.

    Abstract: 9682. Rosenthal, J. H. April 26. Water-tube boilers.-The bottom row or rows of water tubes in boilers of the Babcock and Wilcox type are provided with separate water-supply or steam-delivering connections. Various arrangements are described. Fig. 1 shows a double-ended marine boiler with separate downcomers E connected by means of the manifold box F with the bottom row of tubes A. The steam drum and downcomers may be in front, the tubes being oppositely inclined. The application of a similar arrangement to a land boiler with longitudinal steam drums is illustrated in the Specification. Fig. 2 shows tubes E arranged to deliver steam from the bottom row of tubes to a supplementary steam drum D', which may however be replaced by a manifold box. The upflow header, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, may deliver into a supplementary steam drum corresponding to the drum D', Fig. 2. Fig. 8 shows a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the manifold box F being nippled to the downflow header C' opposite to the ends of the bottom row of tubes.

    Abstract: 13,845. Rosenthal, J. H. July 8. Water-tube boilers.-Relates to sinuous headers for water-tube steam generators of the Babcock and Wilcox type. The headers A are stepped or formed with embossed parts A', A', the faces of which are at right-angles to the water tubes B. The outer parts A' have square, oval, &c. hand- holes closed by removable plates E secured in place by clamps H and screws I. A small hand-hole, closed by a plug or cover, may be provided opposite the end of each tube.
