Column stills and rectifiers; hydrocarbons, distilling. - An oil refining apparatus comprises a dephlegmator 1 under partial vacuum and having a number of baffles 11, 12 through which oil descends from a pipe 23 and condenses oil vapour which enters by the pipe 15. The oil then passes through a circulation cooler 2 and pipes 21, 22 and is raised through the pipe 22 by a current of steam or other condensible vapour which enters through perforations 24. The steam &c. separates from the oil in the chamber 1 and is drawn off by a steam injector 5 and forced into a condenser 6 connected to a vacuum pump 7 surplus oil flows from the chamber 1 to a product cooler 3 and is drawn off by a pump 4.

Separate heater and evaporator apparatus.- In a continuous process for distilling petroleum oils to obtain lubricating oils, topped oil is forced by a pump 8 through a tubular still 1 and through a pressure-reducing valve 14 into a vapour separating chamber 2 in which it passes down a series of trays. The residual oil from the chamber 2 passes through a still 4 which supplies additional vapours to the chamber 2. Vapours pass from the chamber 2 through a dephlegmator 3 to a water or air-cooled condenser 5 which is evacuated by a steam-jet ejector 6, a water-jet condenser 7, and a vacuum pump 12. The dephlegmator 3, chamber 2 and still 4 may be maintained under an absolute pressure as low as 1 mm. of mercury. Steam is passed into the oil, through a. pipe 19 at the entrance to the still 1, through a pipe 20 at the exit. and through a pipe 45 into the still 4.
