    Abstract: The external cavity diode laser and method of generating light comprising: generating light from Fabry-Perot diode laser source (12); collimating light from the source (12) with an intracavity optical element (14); reflecting light via a feedback mirror (18); employing a diffraction grating (16) to receive light from the optical element (14), defract received light to the mirror (18) in a non-zero order; receive reflected light from the mirror (18 ), and direct the reflected light back towards the optical element (14) and Fab ry- Perot diode laser to complete an external cavity (12), the diffraction grati ng (16) additionally directing a portion of the received light from the optical element (14) toward a target.

Also a multiple pass optical cell and method comprising providing a pair of opposed mirrors, one cylindrical and one spherical, introducing light into the cell via an entrance mechanism, and extracting light from the cell via an exit mechanism, wherein the entrance mechanism and exit mechanism are coextensive or non-coextensive.
