    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize clash between a read/write head and a recordign medium, and thereby to improve the reliability of a disk drive by employing one mechanism for launching/retraction of the read/write head. SOLUTION: The mechanism includes a retract lever 81, a retract lever lock 118, a mechanical biasing member (spring 76 or the like), and a voice coil motor 16. After launching, the voice coil motor 16 is used to rotate the retract lever 91 to increase the potential energy of the biasing member. Then the retract lever lock 118 is used to store the built-up potential energy. On the occurrence of a power failure of the disk drive, the mechanism retracts the read/write heads 55, 58 automatically from the medium. The stored mechanical energy during the retract motion of the read/write heads 55, 58 acts on the retract lever 91 to allow the read/write heads 55, 58 automatically to be retracted from the medium.

    Abstract: The invention relates to the tracking servocontrol systems for magnetic data recording disks. The invention provides for an alternating configuration of servocontrol bursts "A/B" for measuring and compensating the offset in the axis of the track which is due to a differential magnetic influence on the servocontrol configuration, as well as a switching network for alternately switching the outputs of the demodulators of the servocontrol system between the inverting and non-inverting input terminals of a differential amplifier, so as to minimise electrical distortion.

    Abstract: A disk drive (30) for receiving a removable cartridge (200) having a recess (266, 270) formed in an exterior surface thereof, and an engaging surface of the disk assembly mounting mechanism (56) is located in that recession. The drive possesses a handle (58) having a lever (70) which extends into the recess to contact the engaging surface of the disk assembly mounting mechanism, whereby further movement of the handle causes the mounting mechanism to move in such a manner that a disk assembly within the removable cartridge is positioned over a spindle motor (54) of the drive for mounting thereto. Other features such as position sensors and enhanced cartridge positioning mechanisms are also provided.

    Abstract: A higher-capacity disk drive system (101, figure 7A) and a higher capacity removable disk cartridge (106) adapted for downward compatibility with older, lower-capacity disk drive systems, wherein a unique control format (208, figure 9C) is stored on higher-capacity removable disk cartridges (106) to distinguish them from older, lower-capacity removable disk cartridges (104) and thereby to facilitate cartridge capacity recognition by the higher-capacity disk drive system (101).     Abstract: A disk drive employing a voice coil actuator to position a read/write head over a magnetic disk retracts the read/write head from the magnetic disk surface and passes an audio frequency alternating current through the voice coil to produce a corresponding movement in the read/write head support structure which generates an audible tone indicating the disk drive status. The alternating current waveform has a positive phase and a negative phase, with the read/write head moving toward the disk in response to one phase of the current and the read/write head moving away from the disk in response to the other phase. Audible tones of different frequencies are produced by varying the frequency of the alternating current waveform. In this fashion the disk drive generates a predetermined sequence of tones separated by silent pauses which identifies a particular disk drive status condition.
