Abstract:
Constant availability and/or presence information of a roaming Instant Messaging (IM) user is provided. The invention recognizes that IM users are not always sitting at their computer where their IM client application is installed. Detection of an unrelated short-range wireless communication device, e.g., a Bluetooth cell phone, or an RFID, carried on the body of the IM user, is accomplished by other, local or guest computers, and reported as presence changes for that particular IM user to an IM server, that logs that IM user's presence in a suitable IM user presence database. Thus, a status or presence change is automatically updated in an IM server or other relevant IM application when a roaming IM user is in a vicinity of a guest computer at a different location.
Abstract:
An ISUP/SIP gateway is implemented to encapsulate SS7 location requests from a switched telephone network into an Internet protocol SIP message including one or more location objects. The ISUP/SIP gateway is implemented between a mobile switching center (MSC) and a VoIP positioning center (VPC) to provide support of unlicensed mobile access (UMA) voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call routing, e.g., for E9-1-1 , 4-1-1 , 2-1-1 , etc. The disclosed location objects that are encapsulated into a SIP message includes calling party number, called party number, CGI, International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), mobility indicator, and/or access point MAC address. At the SIP/ISUP gateway, SS7 integrated services user part (ISUP) location request messages are encapsulated within SIP. The SIP encapsulated location request message is then routed over the Internet to a destination VoIP positioning center (VPC).
Abstract:
An E-9-1-1 voice-over-IP (VoIP) solution is provided wherein a 911 call from a wireless VoIP device is routed directly to the correct Public Safety Answer Point (PSAP) via dedicated trunks, together with correct location information and call-back number. VoIP gateways are implemented locally, at least one per LATA, and accept VoIP packetized data inbound, and convert it to standard wireline voice calls. Calls are routed to an IP address at the VoIP gateway, which then egresses the call to a voice port at a selective router. Dedicated voice trunks (CAMA, SS7, FG-D) are installed between each local VoIP gateway and appropriate selective routers. An Automatic Location Identification (ALI) database is provisioned with ESRKs dedicated for VoIP use. TCP/IP circuits may be established between some or all of the various local VoIP gateways.

Authenticating cloud computing enabling secure services (ACCESS) offloads "client authentication" activity onto a third-party authenticating cloud computing enabling secure services (ACCESS) node. Instead of having a client device authenticate itself directly to a network server, the client device instead authenticates itself to a third-party authenticating cloud computing enabling secure services (ACCESS) node. The authenticating cloud computing enabling secure services (ACCESS) node then provides credentials that are used by the client device to communicate directly with the server (and utilize the service) without any further authentication being necessary.
Abstract:
A least squares geofence method that introduces inventive geofence steps and modifies existing geofence steps to minimize trigger misfires caused by data variability and location blunders and to minimize delayed/missed entry triggers generated under urban and/or indoor conditions. The least squares geofence method periodically retrieves sample locations for a target wireless device to determine that device's geographic location and to evaluate a corresponding side condition. Sample locations retrieved with accuracies greater than 1km are filtered. If a potential change in side condition is detected for a given device, the least squares geofence method retrieves five fast location fixes for that device and evaluates a weighted least squares (LS) location estimate based on sample locations retrieved. A LS location estimate is then filtered according to an anticipated trigger event and the least squares geofence method evaluates a final geofence side condition based on the LS location estimate previously computed.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for steering location requests to a serving one of a plurality of possible location positioning devices. A location request may be steered base on an emergency status of the location request, whether or not the subscriber device has a valid data plan established, based on the device type of the wireless device, or based on the type of application running on the wireless device. A location request may also be steered to a fallback location device if a steering to a primary selected location device fails and sufficient time remains to locate via the fallback location device.

A text messaging caller is enabled to communicate with a called party situated at on voice network, such as a PSTN or emergency 911 service center. The method comprises providing a service center, pre-registering a caller with the service center, receiving a text message from the caller through the service center, converting the text message to a voice message, ascertaining the address of the caller according to pre-registration information, and sending the voice message to the called party on the voice network together with the caller's identification and location information.

Network devices in an Ad-Hoc wireless network self-survey themselves as necessary for approximate location or precise position information, based on methods employed, particularly useful for a non-open-sky environment. A WiFi Access Point (AP) with or without an internal GPS receiver and location conveyance support may utilize the mesh technique. If an Ad-Hoc network device is unable to contact a suitable location server, or a position request has otherwise failed to deliver a precise position, a WiFi AP is manually configured with appropriate location information, and then offers itself as if it were a location server (thereby becoming an 'internal' server', containing either the determined or provisioned location of itself, for use by other APs or devices). A location server (either internal to the AP needing location, or external), performs a 'mesh' location determination by selecting position information from 3 or more location determined APs for subsequent processing.

A short messaging system (SMS) emergency services 911 system (SMS E911). Excess non-voice capacity is used to establish a Short Message Service (SMS) capability for generating an emergency 911 "equivalent" call, together with location information required by emergency services and to meet Federal 911 requirements. 911 requests for emergency assistance are delivered using non-voice centric sources such as SMS, email, and/or autonomous data/message generation devices. SMS 911 capability enables SMS savvy consumers to generate requests for emergency assistance to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). The SMS 911 emergency services request can be understood by an otherwise conventional PSAP, including provision of location information, and translated to provide first responders with the emergency services information they need to offer timely assistance.
