Abstract: An optical structure and devices based thereon for the compensation of chromatic dispersion in a multi-channel light signal are provided. The optic al structure includes a waveguide and a Bragg grating provided therein. The Bra gg grating has a plurality of grating components, each associated with one or a few of the channels to be compensated. The period of each grating component is selected to allow compensation of chromatic dispersion experienced by this particular channel or these particular channels, thereby taking into account the wavelength-dependent dispersion slope of the light signal. Tuning means may also be provided in order to adjust the dispersion of the grating components to the required values.

Abstract: A fine-tuning assembly for an optical grating in an optical fiber is provide d. The fiber is mounted under tension in a hollow structure which has a sliding member longitudinally slideable therein. The fiber is attached to both the sliding member and hollow structure. A slanted passage is provided in the sliding member, forming a small angle with the transversal, and a wedge member is slideably inserted in this passage. To fine-tune the spectral response of the grating, the wedge member is transversally displaced without any longitudinal displacemen t, preferably by the action of screws, thereby pushing on its walls to longitudinally slide the sliding member and adjust the tension in the fiber.

Abstract: Methods to improve the optical properties of Bragg gratings are disclosed. A first method includes a post correction of the refractive index profile by applying an average index correction thereto. The average index correction is obtained through an analysis of the defects of the refractive index profile characterised through a reconstruction thereof. A second method includes a pre-correction to the refractive index profile by characterising the defects of a test grating, and again calculating an average index correction based thereon. Further gratings are then made using a corrected refractive index profile.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a FBG having improved performances and an annealing-trimming apparatus for making the same are provided. The trimming and the annealing steps are advantageously combined into a single process in order to efficiently fabricate complex FBG filters with improved performance. The method comprises the steps of UV-writing a FBG in an optical fiber prior to annealing-trimming characteristics of the FBG by performing the sub-steps of monitoring characteristic data of the FBG while generating a controlled complex temperature profile along the FBG with a heating means according to the characteristic data for providing an accurate controlled annealing process of the FBG, thereby providing an accurate trimming thereof.

Abstract: A dispersion compensator for the compensation of chromatic dispersion in a multi-channel light signal is provided. The compensator includes a pair of optical structures each having a waveguide and a Bragg crating provided therein. The Bragg grating has a plurality of grating components, each associated with on e or a few of the channels to be compensated. An optical assembly propagates the light signal sequentially through both optical structures. The periods of the grating components are selected to allow compensation of chromatic dispersion experienced by this particular channel or these particular channels, thereby taking into account the dispersion slope of the light signal. Tuning means are also provided in order to adjust the dispersion of the grating components of each optical structures, and proper selection of the tuning parameters allows tuning independently both the dispersion and dispersion slope.

Abstract: A tunable dispersion compensator for the compensation of the chromatic dispersion experienced by a single-channel or multi-channel light signal. Th e compensator includes a plurality of optical structures such as chirped Bragg gratings or combinations thereof, each having a characteristic dispersion profile. An optical coupling arrangement successively propagates the light signal in each of these structures, so that it accumulates the dispersion compensation effect of each. A tuning device jointly tunes the dispersion profile of each optical structure by applying a same tuning force thereto, preferably a temperature gradient.

Abstract: A phase mask, for writing fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) in an optical fiber, adjusts the amplitude and the phase of the FBG, while maintaining a constant mean index of refraction of the fiber in a single pass. Specifically, the phase mask embodies the amplitude information so that the amplitude information is an integral part of the pha se mask and preferably cannot be separated from the phase information. A first embodimen t employs a reflective or opaque surface, defining a window, on the substrate of a phase mask controlling the amplitude of light passing through the phase mask. Another embodiment employs a polygonal shaped grating region an a clear substrate. A third embodiment interleaves regions of grating and smooth substrate surface. Preferred embodiments employ two areas of gratings with the areas disposed: perpendicularly, out of bandwidth or out o f phase, relative to each other or additive.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing complex gratings masks having phase shifted regions and a holographic set-up for making the same are disclosed. The method, which can be easily automated, allows to produce arbitrary phase shift in holographically recorded gratings with high precision. Abstract: A parallel monitored and controlled optical PMD compensator comprises a bran ch optical signal split from an optical signal path. A polarization controller (PC) and differential group delay are disposed in each of the paths. A controller adjusts polarization compensation of the PCs in response to PMD dispersion of the branch optical signal. A PMD monitor is preferably disposed in the branch path providing a monitor signal to the controller for use in adjusting the PCs. A polarization rotator may inject a reference signal into the paths with the PC disposed in the branch path acting as a polarization scrambler. A state of polarization (SOP) of the reference signal may be monitored by polarimeters disposed in both paths and the SOP of the reference signal in the branch pat h may be provided to the controller for adjusting polarization compensation of the inline PC.
