Abstract: 745,744. Automatic circuit breakers. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., and WINTLE, T. D. G. Feb. 1. 1954 [Feb. 26, 1953], No. 5364/53. Class 38(5) A push-button tripfree switch, particularly a motor starter provided with overload devices as in Specifications 686,688 and 686,740, comprises a toggle 22, 23 pivoted at one end on a swinging bracket. 32 consisting of a pair of side plates joined by a cross strip 32a and pivoted to a lever 8 by a pin 33, the centre joint of the toggle being connected by a link 20 to a lever 13 which is pivoted at 11a, 19 to "stop" and "start" buttons 11, 12 respectively and to the frame at 14. The other end of the toggle is pivoted to an insulating frame 25 carrying a contact 28 for each phase. the frame being spring-biased to the contact-open position. On overload, units each comprising a bimetal 1 and a heater 1a deflect downwardly into engagement with extension 2b of a trip arm 2 supported in notches 3 in the casing 3a and the turning of arm 2 against springs 3b causes an ambient bimetal 4 secured to arm 2 to engage a ramp 5 on an insulating plate 5a causing the latter to pivot at 5b thereby depressing a part 6a of a spring blade 6. end 6b of which is secured to a metal end plate 10 and the other end 7 of which releases arm 8. Arm 8 pivots at 9 under influence of spring 30 carrying pivot 33 with it. and owing to engagement of strip 32a with a screw 34, pivot 21 rises and spring 30 then urges parts into position shown in Fig 2, the contacts now being disengaged. In the event of failure of spring 30, frame 25 is moved into the "off" position by the movement of the centre point of the toggle to 21b, the toggle arm 23 and bracket 32 thus moving arm 8 to the re-set position. The pressure between end 7 and arm 8 and the position of pivot 31 may be adjusted by screw 34, while the amount of engagement of the two can be varied by moving a pillar 35 in a horse-shoe slot in the plate 10 which causes slot 6d in the blade 6 through which plate 5a passes to be moved vertically. The gap between ramp 5 and bimetal 4 may be varied by adjusting a scale lever 37 pivoted on plate 10 one end of the lever carrying pivot 5b for the plate 5a, the pivot moving in a slot 41 in the plate 10. A rubber cover (Fig.10, riot shown) may be provided for the pushbuttons. Specification 686,739 also is referred to.

[Class 38(v)] Each contact b of a 3-phase motor starter is composed of sheet copper about 0.018 inch thick thereby providing light weight and avoiding bounce when the silver buttons c engage fixed contacts, Fig. 3 (not shown). Flanges e give the contact rigidity and guide it in a recess a 1 in the movable insulating carrier a. Each contact is resiliently mounted by stems f inserted horizontally through slots i in the carrier, a spring g being thereby compressed between the tail of each stem and the carrier The stems are then rotated through 90 degrees, permitted by holes concentric with the slots i, and inserted through slots k in the contact b. Holes in the contact, concentric with the slots k, permit turning of the stems back to the horizontal and the enlarged stem heads f thus secure the contacts and are prevented from subsequent rotation by horizontal bulges b' formed in the contact. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the ends of the contact are also bent over, the ends serving as abutments for a blade spring taking the place of springs g. Alternatively, the contact may be strengthened by a longitudinal dishing formed centrally thereon.

Abstract: 633,395. Electrically released switches. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., BESAG, E., HILL, W. E., and WINTLE, T. D. G. Aug. 14, 1947, No. 22584. [Class 38 (v)] An electromagnetically-actuated 3-phase motor starter as disclosed in Specification 633,396, has in addition to the main contacts controlled by the armature, two sets of auxiliary contacts for controlling interlocking or signalling circuits and energizing the magnet coil, respectively, these contacts being actuated by a start button g and retained by the electromagnet. An insulating block a screwed to a box c containing an armature f, a magnet d and coil c 1 , slidably houses a plate h which carries at one end contact strips o, o 1 urged apart by a spring p, and is normally pushed forward by a spring n so that the strip o bridges contact pillars s in the interlocking circuit and the strip o 1 disengages contact pillars s 1 in the circuit of coil c 1 . When the button g is pressed, the stem g 1 engages a knob k on the plate h, moving it to break the contacts s and make'the contacts s 1 . This action energizes the coil c 1 so that a nose e 1 on the armature engages a lug h 1 on the plate h to keep the contacts actuated when the start button is released. The front of the block a is'stepped at t, whereby the terminals u, u 1 of the contacts s, s 1 are accessible at different levels.

[Class 38 (i)] A mounting for a binding post, terminal or the like comprises a hollow metal insert f disposed in an insulating base a and formed with a constricted throat f , a reduced portion of the stem d of the binding post having peripheral knurls e which are forced into said throat, thereby securing the binding post in position. The base a has partitions which form cells for the terminals. The binding post may be of the type described in Specification 593,252, or a modifica. tion of the type described in Specification 592,135. The stem d has a transverse hole g to receive a cable ferrule h and is tapped at the top to receive a screw cap k within which is received a phmger l enclosing a spring m which presses the plunger into engagement with the ferrule. The cap k may have an inturned lip engaging an annular shoulder on the plunger or the latter may have an annular flange on which the spring is seated and a reduced portion extending freely into the cap and being turned over so that the cap plunger and spring may be withdrawn as a unit.

Abstract: 609,143. Automatic circuit-breakers. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., BESAG, E., HILL, W. E., and WINTLE, T. D. G. March 6, 1946, No. 7040. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit-breaker, which may be adjusted for hand or automatic reclosing, comprises two blades g, g carrying normally closed contacts h and having between them the upper ends of a stop arm f rotatably mounted and a trip arm c slidably and rotatably mounted on the extended spindle d of a spring-loaded push-button e. On overload, a thermal element (not shown) moves a bar a longitudinally so that a lug a engages the lower part c of the trip arm, rotating it about the spindle d. When set for hand-reclosing, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, as soon as the head c of the trip arm comes out of engagement with a slot g in the blade g , a spring k bearing on the press-button e moves the arms c, f so that the head c enters the constriction between g and g forcing the contacts open. For reclosing, the button e is depressed to carry back the arm f while the arm c is held in the tripped position until arm f enters between the blades g, g at w, after which the shoulder d on the spindle d engages the arm c carrying it back until it is forced into the slot g by blade-spring m . As the button is released the stronger spring k carries the arm f Back to the arm c allowing the contacts to close. For automatic reclosing the button e is pushed in and turned through 180 degrees so that the rib l engages the bearing i and renders the spring k inoperative. In this position the catch c is lifted just clear of the end of the slot g and trip bar a rotates the arm c to bear against the arm g to open the contacts directly, and allows them to reclose as soon as the overload is removed. To avoid retarded " automatic " tripping, the shaft on which the trip arms are mounted is eccentric at v so that compensation is obtained for the gap between the arm c and the blade g. The contacts can be opened manually at any time by depressing the button e so that the stop arm f is forced between the blades at w. Initial adjustment is made by a screw p extending through the cover i to bear on the trough of the blade g .

[Class 38 (i)] A compact terminal comprises a pillar a having an aperture b for a cable ferrule c and an intersecting opening tapped at g to receive a cap m which acts on a compression spring k for a plunger i that presses on the ferrule to lock it in position if the cap slackens. When the cap m is tightened it bears on the plunger flange h which rests on a shoulder e in the pillar opening. The pillar may be secured to a base and in a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a securing screw is introduced through the tapped opening.
