Abstract:
A method for the inactivation of B. anthracis spores in soil comprising contacting the soil with an effective amount of a persulfate and an activator for a time sufficient to inactivate substantially all of the B. anthracis spores contained therein.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for treating residuals or waste streams from a plant, such as a drinking water treatment plant. The method includes the steps of obtaining plant residuals or waste streams from a water treatment plant and irradiating the plant residuals or waste streams using microwave radiation from a microwave source. The method also includes the step of drying the plant residuals or waste streams to a predetermined moisture, volume, or weight content reduction and disposing of the same.
Abstract:
The method of the invention provides a simple, reproducible reference, or set of reference standards, as a validation of a calibration standard for filter-based measurements of light absorbing aerosol particles (black carbon and brown carbon) and organic carbon and elemental carbon particles found in indoor and outdoor environments, and in emission streams. The set of reference standards comprise grayscale images deposited by a mist or print at a known density on a substrate material. The reference standards may be made by a printer using as a substrate either paper or another material such as glass fiber, quartz fiber, polypropylene, or cellulose.
Abstract:
A double bottom test tube has a first tubular section having an open end and a rounded closed end. A second tubular section has an open end and a rounded closed end. The open end of the first tubular section is couplable to the open end of the second tubular section.
Abstract:
A monochloramine microsensor includes an elongated housing defining a central axis and an open interior and having a capillary opening at one end. A semi-permeable membrane covers the capillary opening, the semi-permeable membrane allowing diffusion of chloramines there-through while preventing water from entering into the interior of the housing. A chloramine sensitive element in the form of a wire, fiber or nanotube is mounted within the housing, the chloramine sensitive element, when used in conjunction with an anode, outputs current in an amount proportional to the concentration of chloramine present in a liquid sample in which the chloramine sensitive element is immersed. The chloramine sensitive element extends along a length of the central axis to a first end adjacent to and spaced from the semi-permeable membrane. The chloramine sensitive element is a gold wire, a platinum wire, a carbon fiber or a carbon nanotube.
Abstract:
A multi-filter chemical speciation sampler and a virtual impaction particle separation inlet therefore are provided. The inlet includes a housing having a bottom, a collection tube that extends through the bottom, and collection apertures formed in the bottom, arranged around the collection tube; a first plate disposed on top of the housing, having acceleration nozzles disposed at the perimeter thereof; a second plate disposed in the housing below the first plate, having a central aperture and separation apertures disposed around the central aperture. The sampler includes: an inlet; a virtual impaction separator to further fractionate the PM into a course fraction and a fine fraction; a first separation assembly to divide the course fraction into coarse aliquots, comprising first filters to collect the coarse aliquots; a second separation assembly to divide the fine fraction into fine aliquots, comprising second filters to collect the fine aliquots.
Abstract:
A vehicle includes an integrated drive module coupled to an axle thereof. The module includes a hydraulic motor configured to provide motive power at an output shaft, and a differential for distributing the motive power to right and left portions of the axle. The hydraulic motor and the differential are encased within a common housing. The vehicle may include a second integrated drive module having, within a housing, a second hydraulic motor (or multiple hydraulic motors), and a second differential coupled thereto and configured to distribute motive power to right and left portions of a second axle. The second module may also include a transmission within the same housing. The transmission may be a two speed or other multi-speed transmission. The second module is configured to operate in neutral while power demand is below a threshold, and to engage while the power demand exceeds the threshold. The second module may be configured to remain engaged for full-time four-wheel-drive operation.
Abstract:
A method of testing a test substance in an in vitro model of a human tracheobronchial respiratory tract, includes: providing the in vitro model including a cell culture including airway epithelial cells (AECs), a basolateral compartment below the AECs and an apical compartment above the AECs, wherein the AECs form a barrier between the basolateral AND apical compartments; adding the test substance to the apical and/or basolateral compartment; adding a tracer to the basolateral compartment, which is fluorescent, has a molecular weight within 5 kDa of human albumin and is added before, during or after adding the test substance; incubating the cell culture system in a presence of the tracer; collecting at least one sample from the apical compartment; and measuring a fluorescence thereof to determine an effect of the test substance on the AECs. A kit is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A point-of-use (POU) water filtration device has a container. A plurality of channels is formed within the container, water entering the container flowing through the plurality of channels. A plurality of Ultraviolet (UV) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is provided. Each of the plurality of UV LEDs illuminating UV light down an associated channel of the plurality of channels.
