Abstract: A transdermal patch measures a gaseous concentration based on transcutaneous diffusion through an epidermal surface of a patient. The patch employs an indicator responsive to a gaseous presence for emitting light having an intensity and lifetime (duration) based on the gaseous presence. An optical receptor is in communication with logic for receiving the intensity of emitted light and computing a gaseous concentration based on the received intensity and lifetime (duration). A wireless transmitter conveys the results to a base station or monitoring counterpart for untethered patient monitoring. Low power demands and circuit footprint are amenable to a wearable device such as a patch for continuous use.

Abstract: Radiation shield and methods for manufacturing a radiation shield are provided herein, the method includes identifying a substrate for the radiation shield; identifying at least one material for cold spraying on the substrate; applying by cold spray a coating of the at least one material on the substrate thereby obtaining a radiation shield. The radiation shield is lighter, thinner, and more efficient compared to conventional radiation shields.

Abstract: A fiber optic based particle manipulation system employs one or more optical fibers for emanating a refracted optical manipulation signal directed at a target particle for fixing or manipulating the particle for examination, research and manufacturing. A target particle may be a living cell or inanimate sample or compound of matter. An alignment linkage controls optical fibers carrying the manipulation signal for focusing one or more manipulation signals on the target particle. Manipulated particles occupy a fluid medium of either liquid or gas, and are responsive to the manipulation signal based on both photon bombardment and temperature differential from photon contact. The temperature differential is based on surface properties of the target particle, as smooth particles tend to exhibit a greater thermal differential for stronger displacement forces driving or affecting the target particle.

Abstract: Bauxite residue recovery includes mixing a solution of hydrochloric acid (HCL) according to a predetermined concentration, and adding the HCL solution to a quantity of raw red mud recovered from industrial operations as waste material. The highly alkaline property of the bauxite residue, commonly known as red mud is at least partially neutralized from the HCL, and makes the resulting washed red mud more amenable to subsequent uses in various applications in fields such as construction, wastewater treatment, and metal recovery processes. The process recovers washed red mud from the red mud and HCL solution by filtering the raw red mud and HCL solution for generating a stream of leach liquor from the filtrate and the recovered washed red mud from the residue.

Abstract: A system for evaluating a cell sample may comprise a specimen slide scanner, a computer-based image analyzer, and an evaluation subsystem. The specimen slide scanner may be configured to acquire images of an entire surface of a microscope slide upon which the cell sample is mounted. The computer-based image analyzer may be configured to identify one or more follicular clusters within each of the images acquired by the specimen slide scanner. The evaluation subsystem may be configured to (i) compare a number of follicular clusters identified by the computer-based image analyzer to an adequacy threshold, and (ii) present an adequacy notification to a user when the number of the follicular clusters identified by the computer-based image analyzer exceeds the adequacy threshold.

Abstract: A recycling and synthesis of charge material for secondary batteries generates single-crystal charge materials for producing batteries with greater charge cycle longevity. Charge material particles undergo a heating for fusing or enhancing grain boundaries between polycrystalline particles. The resulting, more well-defined grain boundaries are easily etched by a relatively weak mineral acid solution. The acid solution removes material at the grain boundaries to separate secondary particles into primary particles along the grain boundaries. The resulting single crystal (monocrystalline) charge material particles are washed and filtered, and typically re-sintered to accommodate any needed lithium (lithium carbonate), and result in a charge material with larger surface area, higher lithium diffusivity and lower cation ordering.

Abstract: A low-temperature leaching operation employs a raw, red mud slurry directly from aluminum production for an oxalic acid leaching of ferric oxalate. Residual calcium, titanium, aluminum and other rare earths are also recoverable in a secondary stream. Monitoring and control of the pH of the leach solution yields soluble ferric oxalate without high temperatures or specific radiation or light sources. Addition of iron powder results in precipitation of ferrous oxalate, isolated by magnetic separation from the iron powder which recirculates in the solution. Magnetite may then be produced by heating the ferrous oxalate in low pO2 conditions.

Abstract: A protective garment, such as a raincoat or windbreaker has an attached accessory extending from the shoulder region between backpack straps for covering the backpack and shedding precipitation such as snow and rain. The garment accessory includes a flexible planar material coupled in a water shedding engagement with a rear facing portion (back) of the garment, such that the flexible planar material is adapted to shed water over a created void adjacent the rear facing portion, the void resulting from a backpack or other load suspended from straps extending over a shoulder portion of the outerwear above the coupling. A slot in the rear facing portion is adapted to receive the deformed flexible planar material when not deployed over the void, and a zippered receptacle or pouch on an opposed side of the rear facing portion is in communication with the slot for receiving the deformed flexible planar material.
