Abstract: 225,658. White, A. E., (Yoder-Morris Co.). Oct. 3, 1923. Magnetically-actuated valves for thermostats &c. One magnetic element is pivoted intermediate its ends and connected to the valve while another element is connected to a device controlled automatically and mounted to move to and fro between the ends of the other elements to rock it on its pivot and alternately open or close the valve. The valve 9 is connected by an arm 42 to a rocking armature 41 pivoted at 40 adjacent to a non-magnetic partition 13 in the casing. The armature is rocked to open or close the valve by a horse-shoe magnet pivoted at 37 and oscillated by a thermostatic element 27 acting through a compound lever mechanism 32, 34 provided with an adjustable pivot 35. The thermostatic element comprises a copper tube 26 which is secured in position by a flange 26a and ring 28 and surrounds a porcelain rod 27 provided with a cap 30 having a projection 31 adapted to bear against the lever 32.

Abstract: 196,013. White, A. E., (Yoder Morris Co.). Nov. 15, 1921. Tyres, elastic, special apparatus for making.- In a tyre-making machine of the type in which a web of composite tyre and bead material is wound in superposed layers on a rotary core, spaced devices are provided to form the tyre-beads. Fillers c are fed from two drums a, Fig. 2, around a roller 37, over pulleys 59, and along the grooved sides of a platen 33 which spaces the fillers. Two members 40, carrying a series of drums 46, rotate upon a supporting member l surrounding the platen 33, so that the fillers as they are drawn through by rollers q, r are wrapped by the cords k. A continuous fabric band f is fed over a drum e by rollers 35, 36 geared to the roller 37, and passes over a member at the end of the platen 33, conveying rubber h at the same speed as the fillers c from a roll d on a spindle 29 guided in slots 30 so that the roll is always in contact with the band f. The rubber layer h may be omitted. The core D, Fig 7, in chuck 80 is carried by a shaft 79 having a fixed gear wheel 85 between which and a disc 96, which is slidable axially on the shaft, is loosely mounted a gear wheel 81 with friction discs between it and the gear wheel 85 and the disc 96. A worm wheel 89 mounted on a screw-threaded boss 103 is rotated by a worm 99 and bears against the disc 96, to vary the positiveness cf the drive transmitted by the gear wheel 81. A shaft 108, carries a bevel wheel 107 meshing with two bevel wheels 109, 110 loose upon the shaft 100 and coupled by a cone clutch 111 sliding on the shaft 100, and engaging one or other of the bevel wheels when actuated by a link 115 and an arm on a shaft 77 which is rocked as the tension of the material varies over 'a roller y, Fig. 4. A power shaft 83 is geared to the shaft 108 by wheels 117, 120. Two integral gear wheels 82, 84 are mounted to slide on the shaft 83 and are moved along by a handle so that a positive drive is formed by the wheels 84, 85 or a non- positive drive bv wheels 82, 81 and the friction discs. A dog clutch 119 controls the rotation of the wheels 117, 120 and shaft 108. The clutch 119 is interlocked so that it cannot be engaged when the high speed gears 84, 85 are meshed. The material is passed between the spring pressed rollers q, r, Fig. 4. A second rubber sheet s may be fed from a drum t over the roller q on to the upper surface of the material by a band w running over a drum v and the roller q which is grooved to take the beaded edges of the material. The shaft 108 has a sliding pinion 217 carrying on its boss one end of a lever 214 which carries a wheel 213 meshing with the pinion 217 and with one of a number of wheels 212 on the shaft 73 carrying the roller r according to the position of the lever 214 in a stepped slot. A chain sprocket 202 integral with the bevel wheel 110 transmits power to a shaft 119, Fig. 2, having a sprocket 198 which rotates the drum 40. A number of cylinders 143, Fig. 11, carry pistons with rollers a, a, which force the material on to the core D under the action of fluid pressure against a return spring. The peripheries of the rollers are formed to suit the contour of the finished cover, those for operating on the beaded portions being formed as shown in Figs. 15, 16, 17. The cylinders operating on the beaded portions are adjustably mounted in the support 166, secured to a member 170 sliding between arcuate grooves 169, Fig. 11, under the control of a cylinder 182, Fig. 4. The guides 169 are shaped so as to maintain the rollers at the point of contact of the material with the core independent of the size of core. A roller 177, Fig. 11, between arms 176 loosely supported on a shaft 172 bears upon the tyre cover under the action of a coiled spring one end of which is secured to the arms 176, the other end resting against an arm 173 carried by the shaft 172, so that when the cylinders are moved towards the core D the spring is tensioned until it rotates the shaft 172 thereby forcing a bolt 179 in the slide 170 into engagement with ports 180 in the guides 169. Movement of the piston rod 184 in the direction to move the cylinders, away from the core rocks a crank, thereby withdrawing the bolt 179 and freeing the member 170 which moves along the guides. A pipe 153, Fig. 4, supplies both end cylinders 143 and a pipe 154 supplies the main cylinders 143. A master valve 161, in the pcsition shown, admits fluid pressure to the upper end of cylinder 182 and to the bead rolling cylinders 143, also to the main cylinders 143 dependent upon the operation of a valve 156. In the reverse position the valve 161 admits pressure to the lower end of the cylinder 182 and releases the pressure in all the cylinders 143. In order to secure even tension on the cords k each one is threaded through an eye 56, Fig. 2, formed on the end of a spring 54 and finally through wire or similar eyes 57. The drums 46 each have brake rims 51 engaged by pivoted spring-pressed shoes 50. the cords passing over a grooved roller 47 carried between the end's of the brake levers 48. In order to secure even tension on the bead fillers c, Fig. 2, the guide pulleys 59 are carried on pivoted brake arms 58 having shoes 60 acting on the drums 26. The lower ends of the arms 58 are connected to the ends of a crossbar 63 the middle of which is connected by a cable 64 passing over a spring controlled pulley to the lower end of the bracket carrying the roller y, so that the action of the pulley tensions the material passing over the roller y and also the bead fillers c tending to applv the brake shoes 60 to the drums 26. The beaded edges may be of the form shown in Fig. 17. The core D has rings 140 at its sides on which a rubberized fabric strip 116 is laid by hand, the core being rotated at its higher speed for this purpose. Filler material 130 consisting of folded, compressed tapes is then wound on through guides 134, 135, 136, Fig. 7. The beads c in this case may comprise wires 130 and tapes 131 of the same material as the fillers 130 may be wound on above the beads, the whole being consolidated as it is wound on by rollers 150.
