Abstract: PURPOSE: A home appliance and a controlling method thereof are provided to detect turbidity for a preset time by using a turbidity sensor during an initial cleaning process, thereby controlling heating temperature of water. CONSTITUTION: During an initial cleaning process, turbidity of water including detergent is detected for a preset time(415). Based on a degree of change of the detected turbidity, heating temperature of the water is controlled(425). The preset time is set based on weight of laundry. A value of the turbidity is a value detected while driving of a motor is interrupted. The turbidity of the water including the detergent is detected by a turbidity sensor for the preset time. The water is heated by a heater.
