PURPOSE: An autofocus device and a control method thereof are provided to correct the brightness of an image signal and to adjust a focus by using a contrast value calculated from the corrected image signal, when a calculated contrast value is below a reference value. CONSTITUTION: An imaging device captures light from a subject and generates an image signal. A contrast calculation part(201) calculates an image contrast value from the image signal. When the calculated contrast value is below a reference value, a correction part(204) corrects the brightness of the image signal. A photographing apparatus is provided to close a lens cap based on a signal generated when an opening sensor operates, thereby protecting a lens unit. A photographing apparatus(100) comprises a lens unit, a battery(160), a battery container(170), a battery cover, an opening sensor(190), and a lens CAP assembly. The opening sensor is operated when a state of the battery cover is converted from a closed state into an opening state. The lens CAP is arranged in the front of the lens unit. An actuator moves the lens CAP. The photographing apparatus protect the lens unit by closing the lens CAP based on a signal generated when the opening sensor is operated.
