Abstract: PURPOSE: A method of connecting a standard optical fiber to a high delta optical fiber is provided to reduce the loss of an optical fiber and a high delta optical fiber by processing a connection area with a heat treatment. CONSTITUTION: The standard single mode optical fiber(10) comprises a first core(11) and a first cladding(12). The first cladding protects the first core. A high delta optical fiber(20) comprises a second core(21) and a second cladding(22). The second cladding protects the second core. The difference of refractive index of the second cladding and the second core is larger than the difference of refractive index of the first cladding and the first core. The second core is dispersed by a thermal process.

Abstract: PURPOSE: An in-line variable optical attenuator is provided to improve the reliability by finely controlling the amount of optical attenuation of a matched dielectric moving block through a micrometer. CONSTITUTION: A single mode optical fiber(30) has a clad(32) that is polished in a predetermined length. The single mode optical fiber(30) is fixed to a side-polished optical fiber block(50) in a predetermined curvature. A matched dielectric moving block(40) is comprised of a total reflection region having a refractive index identical to that of the clad(32), and a loss region(42) having a refractive index similar to that a core(31) of the single mode optical fiber(30). The matched dielectric moving block(40) is adjacent to the single mode optical fiber(30) and is moved to a length direction of the single mode optical finer(30) by a moving unit.
