Abstract: The present invention relates to a reference frame selection technique for an error resilience of an image codec. The reference frame selection technique uses multiple reference frames for an efficient and reliable video streaming service in an error network environment by reducing the vulnerability of error diffusion which is a problem in an existing technique, uses multiple reference frames, and is used to improve the efficiency of compression. According to the present invention, the reference frame selection technique for the error resilience of an image codec using multiple reference frames includes the following steps whereby a motion estimation is individually performed in each of the multiple reference frames in order to search reference macroblocks of a macroblock to be coded; a degree of coincidence between a reference macroblock area searched by the motion estimation and an intra-coded macroblock (MB) of a reference frame confirmed; and the motion vector (MV) of the reference macroblock which mostly coincides with the intra-coded MB of the reference frame selected from the reference macroblocks searched in each of the multiple reference frames.
