Abstract:
For wireless networks that transmit synchronization signals allowing user equipment to synchronize to cells within the network and transmit reference signals allowing user equipment to determine cell identities, a method and apparatus taught herein advantageously link the synchronization signal sequences to the reference signal sequences according to a defined mapping. The linkingsimplifies the cell search process by allowing user equipment to determine cell identities based on mapping detected synchronization signal sequences to the corresponding reference signal or to the corresponding subset of referencesignals in embodiments where there are more reference signal sequences than synchronization signal sequences.In at least one embodiment, the network is a 3G LTE network and at least the Primary Synchronization Signal(P-SyS) sequences are linked to the Downlink (DL) reference symbol sequences according to a defined mapping, thereby allowing to user equipment to determine cell identities from detected P-SySsequences.

Timing parameters and an identity of a particular one of a number of cell groups are indicated in a signal transmitted in a cellular communication system having a radio frame in a physical layer, the radio frame comprising a number of time slots. In a known one of the time slots, a synchronization signal, S1, is transmitted that comprises a pair of sequences (I) arranged in a first ordering. In another known one of the time slots, a synchronization signal, S2, is transmitted that comprises the pair of sequences (II) arranged in a second ordering. The selected pair of sequences is uniquely ident ified with the particular cell group, and the first ordering of the sequences is used only for transmission in the known one of the time slots, and the second ordering of the sequences is used only for transmission in said another known one of the time slots.

In one embodiment, a method of transmitting system information on a down link shared channel structured as successive subframes includes transmitting (400-416) system information in regularly occurring time windows, each time window spanning some number of successive subframes. The method further includes indicating (406 / 408) to receiving user equipment (120) which subframes within a given time window carry system information. The method and variations of it are applied, for example, to the transmission of dynamic system information on the down link shared channel or other down link channel in a 3GPP E-UTRA wireless communication network (100).

The invention relates to a technique of performing a random access procedure over a radio interface (106) in a mobile terminal (102). A method embodiment of the random access procedure as performed in the mobile terminal comprises the steps of selecting an access time slot for transmission of an access burst (112) over the radio interface; and setting an access bandwidth for transmission of the access burst, wherein the access bandwidth is set smaller than an available transmission bandwidth associated with the radio interface.
