Abstract: An abrasive article includes backing material, binder comprising an anionic water solubilizing material provided on at least a portion of the backing material and abrasive particles provided on at least a portion of the backing material. A method of making such an abrasive article comprises the steps of providing a backing material, applying a first binder containing an anionic water solubilizing material to the backing material, and applying abrasive particles to the backing material.

Abstract: A method of making magnetizable abrasive particles includes providing a slurry layer disposed on a substrate. The slurry layer has an exposed surface and comprises magnetic particles, a binder precursor, and a liquid vehicle. Abrasive particles are electrostatically contacted with the slurry layer such that they are aligned substantially oriented perpendicular to the surface of the substrate, and are partially embedded within the slurry layer. The liquid vehicle is at least partially removed from the slurry layer and the binder precursor is converted into a binder to provide a magnetizable layer comprising the magnetic particles partially embedded in the binder. The magnetizable abrasive particles are separated from the releasable substrate. Each magnetizable abrasive particle respectively comprises a portion of the magnetizable layer disposed on a portion of an abrasive particle.

Abstract: A method of making magnetizable abrasive particles includes: moistening the outer surfaces of ceramic particles with waterglass to provide moistened ceramic particles. Magnetizable particles are contacted with the moistened ceramic particles to provide powder-coated ceramic particles. The powder-coated ceramic particles are heated to at least a temperature sufficient to bond the magnetizable particles of the powder-coated ceramic particles to the respective ceramic particles thereby providing the magnetizable abrasive particles. On a respective basis, each magnetizable abrasive particle comprises a respective ceramic particle having a magnetizable particles bonded thereto.

Abstract: A magnetizable abrasive particle comprises a ceramic body having an outer surface and a magnetizable layer disposed on a portion, but not the entirety, of the outer surface. The ceramic body comprises a platelet having two opposed major facets connected to each other by a plurality of side facets. The magnetizable layer completely covers one of the two opposed major facets, and the magnetizable layer has a magnetic dipole oriented perpendicular or parallel to the facet which it completely covers. A plurality of the magnetizable abrasive particles, and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed. Methods of making the foregoing are also disclosed.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method can comprise: providing a tool that has a first portion that comprises a first material and a second portion that comprises a second material, wherein the second material differs from the first material and the tool is subject to a magnetic field, and wherein the first material and the second material are provided such that the magnetic field is relatively stronger at and adjacent the first portion relative to the magnetic field at and adjacent the second portion; positioning a surface adjacent to the tool so as to be subject to the magnetic field; and disposing magnetizable abrasive particles on the surface, wherein the magnetizable abrasive particles are attracted to an area on the surface adjacent the first portion where the magnetic field is relatively stronger so as to provide for at least one of a desired orientation, placement and alignment of a majority of the magnetizable abrasive particles on the surface.

Abstract: A surface conditioning article comprises: a fabric backing having first and second opposed major sides: a lofty open nonwoven fiber web comprising entangled fibers disposed on and secured to the first major side of the fabric backing; and abrasive particles secured to the lofty open nonwoven fiber web by a binder material disposed on the first major side. At least some of the entangled fibers extend through the fabric backing from the first side to the second side. At least one raised feature comprising an organic polymer is disposed on a minor portion of the second major side of the fabric backing. The entangled fibers extending through the fabric backing have an average diameter and at least one raised feature has a height of at least 8 times the average diameter. A method of making the surface conditioning article is also disclosed.

Abstract: A phenolic resin composition is described comprising at least 50 wt.-% of phenolic resin; first polymerized units comprising a cationic group; and second polymerized units comprising an anionic group. The cationic groups are ionically bonded to the anionic groups. The ionic bonding of the cationic group and anionic group of the polymerized units can provide certain complex viscosity and/or tan delta properties. In some embodiments, the phenolic resin composition has a complex viscosity at 65 C of at least 50 Pascal(seconds) and/or has a tan delta at 65 C ranging from 0.5 to 2.5. Abrasive articles and methods of making an abrasive article are also described.
