Abstract: The fibre-reinforced thermoplastic sheets consist of an amide polymer, or copolymer contg. >=30% amide, with ave. mol. wt. of 3,000-25,000, in which 10-75% glass fibre of length 3.75 cm. min., are embedded. The polymer is pref. nylon-6 or nylon-6,6, or copolymers contg. >=50% of these. The compsns. may also contain 1-50% of sheet fibre or non-fibrous fillers. The sheets are suitable, when heated to a temp. between their softening pt. and 280 degrees C, for shaping in moulds at ambient temp., is not >10 degrees C above the Tg of the polymer. Owing to the low viscosity and surface tension, and good wetting props. of the polymer, combined with use of long fibres, prodts. of high impact and bend strength, and increased heat deformation temps. are obtained.

Abstract: Glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite sheets are formed using semicrystalline polymers that have their glass transition temperature above room temperature and may be cold formed, i.e., shaped in a cold mold when preheated outside the mold. Glass-reinforced low molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate, or blends thereof, may be shaped in a cold mold, and exhibit excellent performance.

Abstract: 1403205 Novaculite filled polyesters ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 27 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54699/72 Heading C3R A reinforced synthetic resinous composition comprises (a) 20 to 95% by weight of at least one linear semicrystalline polyester having a weight average molecular weight of 15,000 to 90,000; (b) 5 to 80% by weight of novaculite having a maximum particle size of about 40 microns and optionally (c) 5 to 50% by weight of glass fibres. The term "polyester" covers both polyesters and copolyesters containing less than 30% of a modifying constituent, e.g. a second acid, a second diol or both. Polyethylene terephthalate is nevertheless the preferred polyester. The semicrystalline polyesters normally have an intrinsic viscosity at 30‹ C. of 0À28 to 0À97 as measured in 1À1 tetrachlorethane/phenol.
