    Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for processing media data for transmission in a data communication medium and for use with data processing systems. One exemplary method processes readable content stored in a stream or set of data which contains samples for presenting a presentation (e.g. video only or audio only or video and audio together) at a plurality of scales of scalable content. A second stream is derived from a first stream, where the second stream contains references to the first stream for use in selecting data, for an operating point within the scalable content, from the first stream. In one aspect of this method, references contained in the second stream are accessed to transmit or store the data from the first stream.

    Abstract: Video data with high frame rates may be displayed on devices with limited resources (e.g., decoder and/or display resources). These devices may have their resources devoted to other tasks or may not be capable to display the video data at the high frame rates. The coding method may include coding the frames such that additional droppable frames are included in the encoded video data. The decoding method may include dropping droppable frames before the encoded video data is decoded to reduce the number of frames that will be decoded and displayed. These methods may be applied to video data that has a variable frame rate and may be combined with processing the image sequence for slow motion playback.

    Abstract: A method for processing scalable content stored in a first set of data which contains samples for presenting a presentation at a plurality of scales of scalable content, the method comprising: receiving one of a plurality of extractor track sets with the one of the plurality of extractor track sets including a second set of data derived from the first set, wherein each of the plurality of extractor track sets corresponds to one of a plurality of operating points within the scalable content, the second set containing references to the first set for use in identifying first operating point data for a first operating point from the first set, the first operating point data being a subset of the first set of data; and accessing, with a digital processing system, the references to transmit, store or present data, referenced by the second set, from the first set without examining each piece of the first set of data and without examining all of the plurality of extractor track sets.
