Abstract: The present disclosure relates to materials and systems to manage thermal runaway issues in energy storage systems. Exemplary embodiments include an insulation layer that is encapsulated to form an insulation barrier. A support member is placed around at least a portion of an insulation layer. The support member provides a support for the insulation layer, allowing the insulation layer to be easily encapsulated and installed in a battery module or pack.

Abstract: Battery thermal management materials, compositions and systems are provided. Exemplary embodiments include a battery thermal management member. The battery thermal management member can include a heat protection layer and a resilient layer. Also provided are methods of preparing or manufacturing such battery thermal management members. In certain embodiments, the heat protection layer can include mica, microporous silica, ceramic fiber, mineral wool, aerogel or combinations thereof.

Abstract: Described herein are insulating structures that include at least one microporous layer including a plurality of pores, a porous layer adjacent to the microporous layer, and a monolithic aerogel structure extending through the plurality of pores of the microporous layer and through at least part of the porous layer. The microporous layer filters aerogel dust from cracked or damaged aerogel within the scaffold, slowing or preventing loss of dust from the insulating structures.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a heat control member, a battery module comprising the heat control member and a battery pack. The heat control member comprises at least two layers of an aerogel composition, wherein the aerogel composition includes a reinforcement material, the aerogel composition including one or more additives, the additives being present at a level of at least about 5 to 20 percent by weight of the aerogel composition; at least one compliant member being layer of compliant material disposed between a first layer of the aerogel composition and a second layer of the aerogel composition; a second layer of a thermally capacitive material disposed at a major surface first layer of the aerogel composition; and a second layer of a thermally capacitive material disposed at a major surface of the second layer of the aerogel composition.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an insulation barrier for use in an electrical energy storage system, the insulation barrier comprising: at least one insulation layer having a thermal conductivity through a thickness dimension of the insulation layer of less than about 50 mW/m-K at 25 °C and less than about 60 mW/m-K at 600 °C; a support member surrounding at least a portion of a perimeter of the insulation layer, the support member having a flexural modulus greater than the flexural modulus of the insulation layer, and an encapsulation layer at least partially surrounding the insulation layer, wherein the encapsulation layer contacts at least a portion of the support member; wherein the support member comprises one or more registration elements, wherein the registration elements couple with a registration guide, wherein the registration guide aligns a plurality of insulation barriers and battery cells with each other.

Abstract: A battery module comprising: an enclosure comprising an interior surface, the interior surface defined by a first endplate and a second endplate extending between a first side wall and a second side wall and a top plate and a bottom plate, two or more battery cells disposed in the interior space of the enclosure; one or more spacer elements disposed between adjacent battery cells, each of the spacer elements comprising at least one thermal capacitive layer and at least one insulation layer; and a plurality of separate edge elements disposed along an interior surface of the enclosure, wherein the edge element comprises a material that is compressible and has an onset temperature of chemical decomposition greater than about 100 °C; wherein the edge element comprises a silicone polymer; and wherein each of the spacer elements contacts one of the plurality of separate edge elements such that a seal is formed by the edge elements between the spacer element and the interior surface of the enclosure thermally isolating the adjacent battery cells.
