Abstract: Quaternary 2-chloroethylammonium salts of the general formula in which R denotes an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R1 denotes a hydrogen atom and X denotes an anion, are prepared by reacting an aqueous or water-containing solution of a corresponding quaternary 2-hydroxyethylammonium salt with hydrogen chloride at a temperature of more than 100 DEG C. and at a pressure of more than 3 atmospheres gauge. Examples describe the preparation of chlorocholine chloride-(trimethyl-(2-chloroethyl)-ammonium chloride).
