    Abstract: Novel dyes of the formula where A is cyano, carbo-C1-C4-alkoxy, carbamyl, N-C1-C4-alkylcarbamyl, N-phenylcarbamyl, acetyl, benzoyl, 4-nitrophenyl or 4-cyanophenyl, X is hydrogen, chlorine, C1-C4-alkyl or C1-C4-alkoxy, and if n is 2 the substituents may be identical or different, n is 1 or 2, R1 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or 2-hydroxyethyl and R2 is phenyl or cyclohexyl, or R1 is hydrogen and R2 is C1-C4-alkyl, or R1 and R2 are C1-C6-alkyl, allyl or phenyl-C1-C4-alkyl or the group is a saturated heterocyclic five-membered or six-membered ring which may additionally contain an oxygen or a further nitrogen as ring members, Y is hydrogen, hydroxyl, methyl or ethyl; where R3 is linear or branched C1-C12-alkyl, or is phenyl; where R4 is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl and R5 is hydrogen, linear or branched C1-C12-alkyl or trifluoromethyl; chloromethyl; C1-C4-alkoxymethyl, phenoxymethyl, benzyl, phenylethyl, C3-C7-cycloalkyl, phenyl, H5C6-CH=CH- or -CH2-PO(OR6)2, where R6 is C1-C4-alkyl; or where R7 is C1-C12-alkyl, phenyl or C1-C12-alkylphenyl; or Y is N-C1-C4-alkylamino if R1 and R2 are C1-C4-alkyl, or Y is N,N-di-C1-C4-alkylamino, N-pyrrolidinyl, N-piperidinyl or N-morpholinyl if has the same meaning, and Z is hydrogen or, if R1 and R2 are C1-C4-alkyl or allyl and Y is Z is hydrogen, methoxy or ethoxy, and alkyl, phenyl, phenoxy and phenylthio may contain additional substituents. The dyes give blue to violet hues on synthetics, in particular on linear polyester fibers. Where Z is methoxy or ethoxy, greenish blue dyeings are obtained. The dyeings are very deep, clear and brilliant. Some of the dyes may also be used for the mass coloring of thermoplastics.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of 1-amino-8-nitro-4,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone by partially reducing the corresponding dinitrohydroxyanthraquinone and isolating the reduction product, in which crude 1,8-dinitro-4,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone obtained by nitrating 4,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone is partially reduced in a phenol-water mixture, which contains from 5 to 50% by weight of water, in the presence of an alkali metal phenolate, by means of a reductone, reductonate or a mixture of these. The product is virtually free from by-products and is suitable for use for the synthesis of dyes.

    Abstract: The production of 1-amino-4-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic esters by reaction of 1,2-dihydro-6-nitro-7,8-diphthaloyl-3,1,4H-benzoxazone-4 with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. Pure carboxylic esters are immediately obtained in a high yield previous isolation of the carboxylic acid.
