Abstract: Production of flexible expanded moldings from olefin polymers by heating a mixture comprising an olefin polymer, a peroxide and a solid expanding agent in a mold, which is gastight when closed and is filled with a volume of said mixture equal to from 95% to 100% of its capacity, to a temperature above the softening point of the olefin polymer and above the decomposition temperature of the peroxide and of the expanding agent, starting to release the pressure in the mold to atmospheric pressure, immediately increasing the volume of the mold to from 3 to 35 times the volume of the expansible melt within from 0.1 to 20 seconds and then cooling the expanded molding. The moldings are used as thermal and sound insulating materials and as upholstery padding.

Abstract: A flameproofed plastic composition comprises a readily flammable synthetic resin and a brominated butadiene or isoprene polymer of polymerization degree of 2 to 2,000 in amount such that the bromine content of the composition is from 0,5 to 6% based on the resin. Specified resins are polymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic and esters, vinyl acetate, unsaturated polyester resins, polystyrene and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile. Expandable resin compositions such as bead-like styrene polymers containing readily volatile hydrocarbons. Specified brominated polymers are hexadecane tetraene, cyclodecatriene, vinyl cyclohexene which have been brominated, and hexabromocyclododecane, octabromohexadecane, brominated butadiene polymers, and brominated degraded natural rubber. The composition may be made by mixing the resin and bromide compound, or dissolving them in a solvent and subsequently removing it, or by adding the bromine compound prior to polymerization of the monomer, this latter method being especially suitable for the production of bead-like expandable styrene polymers.ALSO:A flame-proofed plastic composition comprises readily flammable expandable synthetic resin and a brominated butadiene or isoprene polymer of polymerisation degree of 2 to 2000 in amount such that the bromine content of the composition is from 0,5 to 6% based on the resin. Specified resins are polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate and a styrene of acrylonitrilevinyl carbazole terpolymer. The bromine compound may be added to the preformed resin or to its monomer before polymerization. Specified bromine compounds are hexabromocyclododecane, octabromohexadecane, brominated butadiene polymers of polymerization degree 250 to 300, and of 50 to 100, brominated degraded natural rubber, and brominated hexodecane-tetraene, cyclodecatriene, and vinyl cyclohexene. In Examples 3 styrene is polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of catalyst benzoyl peroxide and expanding agent pentane with octabromohexadecane as flame-proofing agent; the polymer is expanded by heating in steam or boiling water 4 a vinyl carbazole styrene-acrylonitrile mixture is polymerised in water in the presence of hexabromo-cyclododecane, benzoyl peroxide and pentane and the product expanded by heating with steam 5 styrene is polymerized to an expandable plastic in the presence of polystyrene, brominated polybutadiene (250-300), pentane and benzoyl peroxide 6 expanded polystyrene is prepared by polymerizing styrene, a little divinyl benzene, brominated polybutadiene (50-100), dichlorodifluoromethane and azodiso-butyronitrile, 7 methylmethacrylate is polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, pentane and brominated cyclododecantriene 8 polystyrene-brominated natural rubber mixture is treated under pressure with water and petroleum ether 9 expandable polystyrene beads containing pentane are coated with brominated cyclododecantriene 10 as for 9 using also cyclohexane 11, 12 and 13 expandable polystyrene is produced as in the previous examples.

Abstract: An expanded resinous material consists of porous thermoplastic particles the interstices between the particles being filled with a foamed cured synthetic resin. Spherical porous particles of less than 10 mm. diameter may be prepared by incorporating a volatile liquid within particles of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), polyurethanes, polyethers, polystyrene or styrene copolymers with butadiene or acrylonitrile and heating the particles above the boiling-point of the liquid. Specified hardenable foamed synthetic resins are urea/formaldehyde, phenol/formaldehyde, melamine/formaldehyde, or polyurethane resins. These may include a surface-active agent and a curing agent. In preparing the material the particles should be tightly packed and the foam added to it. Fillers, e.g. granulated cork, asbestos or fibre waste may also be added. The material may be prepared batchwise by placing particles in a mould with closed side walls and a perforated upper closure, which allows air to pass through but prevents escape of the particles, and introducing the foam at an inlet in the lower part of the mould. The material may then be set in the mould or conveyed elsewhere. In a continuous process particles fed into chamber 2 from hopper 1 are carried by screw 3 to inlet 4 where the foam enters. More plastic may be introduced at a second inlet (not shown) in pipe 5. The foam may be agitated or vibrated and a pressure difference may be used to convey it along the pipe to the site where it is to be solidified. The product may contain 5-95% of the porous resin particles and may be coated, e.g. with asbestos. It can be used to make shaped articles, e.g. structural units or heat insulation. In Examples 1 and 2 particles of expanded polystyrene are mixed with a foamed urea-formaldehyde resin in the apparatus shown. In (1) the particles are expanded with sodium diisopropyl-naphthalene sulphonate, phosphoric acid and air. In (2) oxalic acid was added to the resin. In (3) polyvinyl chloride particles were incorporated into a polyether prepared from pentaerythritol monoglycidyl ether, 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dimethyl-dicyclohexylmethane and H2O2.
