    Abstract: 1286983 Contacting gases with liquids; gas/ liquid catalytic reactions; controlling exothermic reactions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFARIK AG 18 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 45983/69 Headings B1F B1R and B1X In an exothermic catalytic reaction involving a gaseous reactant and carried out in the presence of a liquid reaction medium containing a dissolved or suspended catalyst a portion of the liquid reaction medium is withdrawn during the reaction and recycled to the remaining liquid reaction medium through a nozzle at a speed of 5 to 100 metres per second at the point where the gaseous reactant is introduced below the surface of the liquid reaction medium, the recycled liquid reaction medium being introduced into an open-ended chamber located in the liquid reaction medium and extending in the direction of entry of the recycled liquid reaction medium and which has an inlet opening with a mean diameter of from 2 to 20 times the mean diameter of the nozzle and a length of 3 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter, and heat is withdrawn from the liquid reaction medium outside the open-ended chamber. In the apparatus shown in the drawing liquid reaction medium is withdrawn from vessel 4 (which may be jacketed) by a pump 6 passed through a cooler 11 and returned via line 7 and nozzle 1 at the upper end of an open-ended chamber 3. Gaseous reactant enters at 2 and further heat is withdrawn from the reaction by means of a cooling coil 12. The gaseous reactant may react with a second reactant which is dissolved in and/or suspended in the liquid reaction medium. The second reactant may also be gaseous. The gaseous reactant may be hydrogen and the catalyst a hydrogenating catalyst.

    Abstract: 1,3-propanediol hydroxypivalic acid monoester (I) prepn. of disporportionating hydroxypivalaldehyde (II) at increased temp in presence of the hydroxide of Ca, Ba or Sr, as in parent patent, is improved by reaction in presence of Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, or Sr(OH)2 and of water, or in presence of >=1 oxide and/or hydroxide of Li, Mg, Tl, Pb, Bi, La, Ce, Zn, Cd, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and/or oxides to Ca, Sr and Ba, opt. in presence of water, in place of or in addn. to the hydroxides of Ca, Ba, or Sr. Yields and space-time yields are higher and a pure prod. is obtd. The rate of reaction is greater, and the reaction may be carried out at room temp. (II) may be pure, or the impure prod. of reaction of isobutyraldehyde with HCHO. The ester prepd. in presence of water may be purified over acid ion-exchangers. (I) is a raw material for synthetic resins and softeners.
