Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein X represents hydrogen or chlorine acid at least four of the X substituents being chlorine and a process for the preparation thereof wherein a compound of the formula wherein X has the meaning given above and Y represents chlorine, bromine or iodine is treated with alkali so that hydrogen halide is split off. Solvents such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol may be employed. Alkalies specified include alcoholic solutions of caustic soda or potash or the corresponding alkoxides. Aqueous or aqueous alcoholic alkalies may also be used. Stabilisers may be added to the reaction mixture, e.g. phenothiazine, hydroquinone or paratertiary-butylcatechol. The preparation of 5.6-dimethylene-1,2,3,4,7,7- hexachlorobicyclo-(2,2,1) -heptene-(2) from 5,6-bis-chloromethyl-1,2,3,4,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo-(2,2,1) - heptene-(2) is described in examples.
