Abstract: Leather surfaces are rendered matt by applcn. of a coating agent, as a soln. in an organic solvent or an aq. dispersion, and drying. The coating agent contains micro-capsules with particle size 2-50 microns as matting agent. USE/ADVANTAGE - The matt surface is retained after mechanical treatment of the leather, e.g. after polishing. A level, full-bodied leather surface is obtd. Materials other than leather, e.g. paper, textiles, wood, minerals, metals or synthetics, can be rendered matt by use of the micro-capsules. Use of micro-capsules of size 2-50 microns as matting agent in primers and/or dressings for finishing leather is claimed.

Abstract: Described is a process for preparing a dispersion of microcapsules by condensing a partially methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin having a molar ratio of melamine:formaldehyde:methanol of from 1:3.0:2.0 to 1:6.0:4.0 in water in which the essentially water-insoluble material forming the capsule core is present in dispersion in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a homopolymer or copolymer of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid as protective colloid at a pH of from 3 to 6.5 by preforming the microcapsules at a temperature of from 20 to 50° C. and then curing the capsule wall of the preformed microcapsules at >50 to 100° C., which comprises adding from 5 to 100% by weight of melamine, based on the melamine-formaldehyde resin, in the course of curing. The microcapsule dispersions are formaldehyde-reduced and of low viscosity.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for the production of a dispersion of microcapsules, by condensation of a partly methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, with a molecular ratio of melamine:formaldehyde:methanol of from 1:3.0:2.0 to 1:6.0:4.0, in water, in which the essentially water-insoluble, capsule core forming material is dispersed, in the presence of an a alkali metal salt of a homo- or co-polymer of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropansulphonic acid, at a pH-value of from 3 to 6.5, by pre-forming the micro-capsules at a temperature of from 20 to 50 DEG C and subsequent hardening of the capsule wall of the pre-formed microcapsules at > 50 to 100 DEG C. The method is characterised in that 5 to 100 wt. % of melamine, based on the melamine-formaldehyde resin, is added during the hardening. The microcapsule dispersions are of reduced formaldehyde content and of low viscosity.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of spherical, hard, mono- or oligodisperse particles having a diameter of from 0.1 to 100 mu m, by condensation of partially etherified melamine-formaldehyde precondensates which are infinitely soluble in water to give a clear solution, in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer which carries highly acidic groups and has a K value of from 100 to 160, at pH 3 to 6 and at from 20 to 100 DEG C, and condensing the resultant turbid solution until the precondensate has been consumed, giving a dispersion of the particles. The dispersion is neutralised. The particles can be used in the form of the aqueous dispersion or after isolation from the dispersion. … The particles are spherical, hard, non-swellable particles which can be used, for example, as sizes for plastics, polishes, flatting (matting) agents, extruders and/or as pigments. … The process allows the targeted preparation of particles of a prespecified size and particle size distribution.
