Abstract: Acetylene is produced by the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen in a flame reactor wherein the reactants after mixing are passed into the reactor through a gas distributer comprising a plurality of parallel tubes or channels containing inserts (C in the Figure), which offer resistance to the gas flow at the gas inlet end of the tubes. The inserts have a sharp edge at the lower end as shown, and decrease the cross-sectional areas of the tubes to 30-90% of the total. Inserts of different internal diameter may be used for different gas flow rates.

Abstract: Acetylene is produced by an incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen in which these materials are preheated separately and the preheated gases are supplied to a mixing chamber in which they meet at the inlet end at high speed, and the speed of the mixture is retarded towards the outlet end by conical widening of the mixing chamber, and the mixture is then supplied to a reaction chamber in which the reaction takes place in the form of a flame, and the products are rapidly cooled, wherein a safety device which automatically initiates safety measures in the event of an ignition in the mixing chamber receives its impulse from the pressure difference between the point at which the gases meet and a point further along in the direction of flow at which a small speed of flow prevails. The safety device may receive its impulse from the pressure difference between the point at which the gases meet, and either the end of the conically widened part of the mixing chamber, or the reaction chamber or the surrounding atmosphere. The safety measure employed may be a valve in the oxygen supply line to the preheater which is closed by means of electrical actuation. Specification 672,446 is referred to.
