    Abstract: Process for the preparation of formic acid by reacting carbon monoxide with water at temperatures from 100 to 250 DEG C and absolute pressures from 100 to 350 bar, by adding, to the reaction mixture, tertiary amines of the general formula I in which R , R and R represent C1- to C14-alkyl, C3- to C8-cycloalkyl, aryl and C7- to C16-aralkyl, or together represent a 1,4- or 1,5-alkylene group which is optionally mono- to tetrasubstituted by C1- to C4-alkyl, with the proviso that the total of the carbon atoms of R , R and R is 3 to 40.
