    Abstract: The invention consists of a process for producing a mixture of esters of aliphatic unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, wherein the acid contains 6 to 12 carbon atoms and the alcohol is a C1-C18 alkanol, a C5-C12 cycloalkanol, or a C7 to C10 arylalkanol, by passing acetylene or methylacetylene into the anhydrous alcohol, at 30 to 120 DEG C., or at most containing 5% water, and simultaneously introducing nickel tetracarbonyl and less than the equivalent amount of nickel of an organic or inorganic non-oxidising acid, and discontinuing the supply of acetylene or methyl acetylene before the alkanol is completely used up. Up to 80% of the nickel tetracarbonyl may be replaced by free carbon monoxide. There may also be added to the reaction mixture ligand field complex formers, a large number of which is specified, a halide, or ligand field complex of copper, iron, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, mercury, tin or bismuth and one or more polymerisation inhibitors. The product may be hydrogenated and/or worked up for free acids. The examples relate to the use of ethanol, isopropanol, isobutanol, cyclohexanol.

    Abstract: Aliphatic ketones and ketonic carboxylic acids are produced by causing carbon monoxide and water to act on olefines at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a complex cyanide of a metal capable of forming metal carbonyls or in the presence of a mixture of compounds capable of combining with each other to form such a complex cyanide. Suitable catalysts are, for example, the complex cyanides of nickel such as K2(NiCy3) or K2(NiCy4), or complex cyanides containing in the cation such metals as sodium or lithium, calcium, barium or magnesium, zinc, cadmium or mercury, or which contain the ammonium radical or the radical of organic amines. The catalysts may be used in solution or suspension or applied to carriers such as aluminium oxide, silicic acid gel or pumice stone. Suitable starting materials are olefines such as ethylene, propylene, butylene, butadiene, di-isobutylene or cyclic olefines such as cyclohexene, cyclo-octene, terpenes or styrene. Olefines containing substituents, e.g. allyl chloride and unsaturated alcohols such as allyl alcohol, butene-3-ol-2 or 2-butene-2-diol-1.4 may also be used. The preferred temperatures for the reaction are in the range 100-250 DEG C. and at a pressure of 50-200 atmos. The reaction may be carried out continuously or batchwise. Solvents, e.g. ethers, ketones or saturated hydrocarbons may be used. The gases used may be diluted with, for example, nitrogen or methane. In the examples carbon monoxide and water are reacted with ethylene under varying conditions to give high molecular polyketones, keto acids, propionic acid, unidentified acids and some lower ketones.

Quinols of the formula where each R is H, alkyl of 1-10 carbon atoms, araliphatic of 7-10 carbon atoms or aromatic of 6-8 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting R-C#C-R with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of an iron carbonyl at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure in an inert solvent, the water being added continuously or in portions during the reaction preferably at the rate at which it is used up. The water may be added in the form of water supplying compounds or adducts. The carbonyl may be iron pentacarbonyl, diiron enneacarbonyl or trimeric iron tetracarbonyl.
